COMPUTER AIDED PLANNING OF UNDERGROUND MINING EXPLOITATION.

Objective

THE COMPUTER AIDED PLANNING OF THE UNDERGROUND MINING EXPLOITATION COULD REDUCE THE UNDERGROUND MINING VENTURES AND GIVE RISE TO A BETTER MINERAL RESOURCES VALORIZATION IN THE SPECIAL CASE OF THE NEVES/CORVO DEPOSIT.
MOREOVER, IT IS WORTHWHILE TO POINT OUT THAT THE MODULAR ARCHITECTURE OF THE SOFTWARE PACKAGE TO BE DEVELOPED WOULD MAKE IT USABLE FOR ANY OTHER MINE.
The development of software modules for the parametrisation and modelling of the underground exploitation methods has been carried out. The modelling of each step of the production cycle, the medium term selection of production zones and the data recording and display of production results have been carried out.

The main objective of this research project was to develop software modules enabling the integrated simulation of the entire mining processes. The software developed provides simulations of some explotation processes taking as input geostatistical numerical models of the orebody. The outputs of such simulations allow the technical and economical characterization of different alternatives of the ultimate project of the mining method and the short and medium term production planning.
The results obtained during the execution of the research project were quite encouraging. In fact, it was possible, by applying the developed software modules, to perform simulations of the mining process operations whose results are in accordance with the actual data coming from the exploitation of a real mine. In particular, the great ore grade variability found during the first exploitation year of the mine, could have been forecasted, during the project phase, by using adequate modelling and integration of the various mining processes which constitutes one of the main reasons of this research project.
THE OBJECTIVE OF THE RESEARCH WORK IS TO DEVELOP A SOFTWARE PACKAGE FOR PERSONAL COMPUTER THAT ENABLES TO ASSESS THE PROJECT ALTERNATIVES FOR UNDERGROUND MINE EXPLOITATION PLANNING AT THE STAGE OF THE ULTIMATE PROJECT OF THE MINING METHOD AND OF THE PRODUCTION PLANNING. THIS SOFTWARE PACKAGE WILL BE BUILT ON A MODULAR ARCHITECTURE SO THAT IT CAN BE USED IN VARIOUS CASES BY DEVELOPING SPECIAL MODULI THAT FIT TO EACH PARTICULAR SITUATION.
THE RESEARCH WORK IS DIVIDED INTO THE FOLLOWING PHASES:

I. CONSTRUCTION OF NUMERICAL MODELS OF THE OREBODY BY MEANS OF GEOSTATISTICAL METHODS;
II. MINING METHODS PARAMETRIZATION (CUT AND FILL AND SUBLEVEL STOPING);
III. EXTRACTION PROCESS MODELLING: EACH STEP OF THE PRODUCTION CYCLE WILL BE MODELLED AND THE ELEMENTARY MODELS WILL BE ASSEMBLED THROUGH A MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE;
IV. MEDIUM TERM PLANNING: PANEL DEFINITION ACCORDING TO THE PRODUCTION PLANNING OF THE MINE DURING THE PERIOD;
V. SHORT TERM PLANNING: ASSESSMENT OF SPECIFIC MINING SEQUENCES AND PRODUCTION SCHEDULING WITH A GIVEN CONSTRAINT (FOR INSTANCE MINIMIZATION OF THE GRADE FLUCTUATION);
VI. INTEGRATED PROCESS SIMULATION AND MODEL VALIDATION
VII. PRODUCTION CONTROL - COMPARISON BETWEEN FORECASTED AND ACTUAL RESULTS, ANALYSIS OF THE DISCREPANCIES;
VIII. INTEGRATED PACKAGE PREPARATION.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
