LITHIUM RECOVERY FROM ALUMINIUM LITHIUM SCRAP.

Objective

TO DEVELOP A PROCESS BASED ON CHLORINATION OF MELTED SCRAPS PRODUCING INTERMEDIATE RICH IN LITHIUM CHLORIDE.
The efficiency of the recovery of lithium chloride and of conventional aluminium alloy from aluminium-lithium scrap by our two steps chlorination process is proved.
The lithium present in the Al-Li scrap is adequately (120 T of lithium chloride per 1000T of scrap) recovered by the process. The lithium content of the metal decreases from about 2% in weight down to 1000 ppm in the melting furnace and then down to about 50 ppm after chlorination in the reactor. This aluminium alloy depleted in lithium is appropriate to be recycled in a secondary smelter.
A) THE ENGINEERING OF A TECHNICAL INSTRUMENTATION PHASE INCLUDES:
. A MELTING FURNACE OF ABOUT 100 KG OF AL-LI SCRAP CAPACITY. THE REMELT OF THE TURNINGS WILL BE DONE UNDER MOLTEN SALTS.
. A CHLORINATION REACTOR OF THE SAME CAPACITY WITH FIXED CHLORINE AND ARGON INJECTION TUBES
. AN ARGON AND CHLORINE STORAGE AND SUPPLY WITH SAFETY DEVICES AND WITH WEIGHT, PRESSURE, AND FLOW CONTROL
. A FUME EXHAUSTER WITH FILTRATION AND SCRUBBING
. EQUIPMENTS FOR THE PREPARATION OF THE INPUT MATERIALS AND THE CASTING OF THE OUTPUT PRODUCTS
. A FULLY COMPUTERIZED MEASUREMENT OF THE OPERATING PARAMETERS.

B) THE TESTING PHASE OF THIS CHLORINATION UNIT:
ABOUT 250 TREATMENTS ARE NECESSARY TO EXPLORE VARIOUS POSSIBILITIES IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO DERIVE MATERIALS AND THERMAL BALANCES AND TO GIVE FIGURES ABOUT THE BEHAVIOUR OF EQUIPMENTS. THESE TREATMENTS WILL PRODUCE A SLAG RICH IN LITHIUM CHLORIDE.

C) EXTRACTION OF PURE LITHIUM CHLORIDE FROM THE PREVIOUS SLAG. LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS:
-THE CRUSHING OF THE SLAG
-THE LI CL DISSOLVING KINETICS
-THE SOLID-LIQUID SEGREGATION
-THE IMPURITY CONTENT OF THE FINAL LITHIUM CHLORIDE
EXPERIMENTS ON AN EXISTING PILOT UNIT OF VARIOUS PARAMETERS RELATED TO EVAPORATION, DRYING, SOLVENT RECYCLING AND OTHER TECHNIQUES USED IN THE PROCESS.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
