Objective
THE AIM IS TO REGENERATE CHROMIUM (VI) BY ELECTROLYSIS OF CHROMIUM (III) LIQUOR PRODUCED AS A WASTE BY-PRODUCT IN THE CHEMICAL PROCESSING INDUSTRIES.
THE REGENERATION OF CHROMIUM (VI) FROM CHROMIUM (III) WASTE LIQUORS IN MEMBRANE FREE SYSTEMS WILL BE STUDIED USING FLOW THROUGH SYSTEMS USING POROUS LEAD DIOXIDE ANODES. THE ACTIVE ELECTRODE MATERIAL, LEAD DIOXIDE, WILL BE DEPOSITED IN THE PORES OF POROUS ELECTRODE MATERIAL, GRAPHITE OR OTHER SUITABLE SUBSTRATE AND THE SOLUTION PUMPED THROUGH THIS, ACTING AS AN ANODE, TO REGENERATE THE CHROMIUM (VI) WITHOUT IT THEN COMING IN CONTACT WITH THE CATHODE.
SPECIAL CATALYTIC ELECTRODES OF THIS TYPE, DESIGNED TO ENSURE OXYGEN REDUCTION AT THE CATHODE IN PREFERENCE TO CHROMIUM (VI) REDUCTION, WILL BE PREPARED AND STUDIED. TAFEL PARAMETERS FOR THE HYDROGEN EVOLUTION, OXYGEN REDUCTION AND CHROMIUM (VI) REDUCTION PROCESSES AT THE CATHODE WILL BE OBTAINED.
THE ABOVE RESULTS WILL ALLOW A SYSTEMATIC APPROACH TO THE DESIGN OF A SUITABLE CATHODE. IN THESE EXPERIMENTS THE CONDITIONS WITHIN THE FINAL FLOW CELL DESIGN WILL BE SIMULATED WITH A SOLUTION AT REST AND USING A ROTATING DISC ELECTRODE TO ACHIEVE RELATIVE MOTION.
THE OVERALL COMBINED SYSTEM WILL BE ASSESSED BY EXAMINING YIELDS AND CURRENT EFFICIENCIES AT VARIOUS CURRENT DENSITIES, ELECTRODE POTENTIALS, ELECTROLYTE FLOW RATES, ELECTRODE POROSITY AND ANODE/CATHODE ELECTRODE AREA RATIOS IN PREPARATIVE SCALE ELECTROLYSIS. FURTHER WORK WILL BE CARRIED OUT USING A LARGER SCALE APPLICATION OF THE RESULTS OBTAINED TO DATE ON HIGH CURRENT DENSITY SYSTEMS.
