NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING METHODS APPLIED TO WOOD-BASED PANELS AND SOLID WOOD

Exploitable results

The aim of the project was to investigate and develop new techniques for the quality assessment of wood based composite products and solid wood. Results have improved knowledge about the measurement of density profiles and vibrational behaviour in wood and wood products, as well as grading by using visual inspection and ultrasonic techniques. New sets of ultrasonic probes have been designed for the assessment of medium density fibreboard (MDF) quality. Ultrasound was also exploited to grade the material strength properties of structural timber and to detect glueline defects in glued laminated timber. 2 models were developed to define the theoretical efficiency of ultrasonics for flaws detection in wood. Other systems developed were a prototype of a board density profile interpreter, control system based on fuzzy logic for board production and a prototype system for visual detection of surface defects on wood and wood based materials. Also the capabilities of data fusion and coupling for industrial application were demonstrated. The results of the project have been used subsequently by commercial enterprises.
