Objective
The objectives of this project will be to identify the factors controlling recently discovered lead zinc and iron copper gold mineralisation, to develop methods of exploration which can be applied to other carbonate sequences in northern Greece, and to define targets for drilling.
The investigations comprise 5 topics: identification of fertile lineaments; regional variations in metallic elements; dispersion haloes in carbonate rocks; base and precious metal concentrations in gossans; and preliminary studies of ore mineralogy and chemistry as a guide for future mining processing studies.
The techniques utilised will include: integration of remote sensing and regional geophysical data; detailed mapping and sampling of selected mineral occurrences; and mineralogical, chemical, and fluid inclusion analyses as well as comparison of isotopic data from mineral occurrences and brines of the prinos oilfield. The individual techniques will be combined in a multidisciplinary approach which has not been attempted previously for carbonate sequences in Greece.
