DEVELOPMENT OF NEW OR IMPROVED SEPARATION PROCESSES FOR THE TREATMENT OF CHROMITE ORES INDIGENEOUS TO THE COMMUNITY

Objetivo

After researching processing methods and according to the existing mining operations conditions, a process flow-sheet for a dense media separation was prepared separately for each mine. The evaluation of the processing results has been carried out not only from the technical point of view but, also, from the economical development one. So, a preliminary budget calculation regarding the capital of investment, and the operational cost have been prepared separately for each mine.

Finally, a proposed generic flow-sheet for the chromite processing under the new philosophy of production of high chromium content concentrates has been set-up.

It can be said that the problem of the mineral processing of Greek chromites under the recent antagonistic market conditions has been solved from the scientific and technological point of view. A thorough feasibility study taking into consideration this new proposed philosophy and the results of the present project is needed to incorporate the scientific - technological aspects to the financial - marketing ones.
The aim of the proposal project is to develop new or/and improved processes for the potential exploitation of low-grade, difficult to treat Community chromite deposits. The project targets in the scientific and technical research of increasing the chromite Community reserves by :

1. Developing new flotation flowsheets based on prototype combination of conventional reagents.
2. Studying the surface properties of chromites.
3. Testing the column flotation method to recover chromite.
4. Developing a safe physical separation technique based on the magnetic properties of the constituent minerals.
5. Developing new selective grinding flow sheet by using surface acting reagents.
6. Treating fine particles by innovative gravity separation equipment.

The development of new methods of separation of chromite will increase the Community reserves of chromite giving the E.E.C. chromium industry the possibility of further development with simultaneously decrease of its dependence.
