THE DEVELOPMENT OF ELECTROCHEMICAL PROCESSES AND INTEGRATED SYSTEMS FOR THE RECOVERY OF METAL VALUE FROM SPENT CATALYST

Objective

The aim of the research is to develop electrochemical oxidative technologies to leach the metal from the substrate and recover it by electrochemical means on a continuous basis.

This study encompasses 3 functional areas of the recovery process:
collection (sorting and pretreatment);
chemical leaching (preconcentration by various advanced oxidative methods, solvent extraction separation);
and electrowinning (electrochemical reactor design and development of an integrated processing system).

Studies will concentrate on the recovery of nickel and cobalt catalysts which are produced in vast quantities for the petrochemical industry. Other catalysts such as platinum, palladium and rhodium, which are of increasing importance for automobile exhaust catalytic converters, will also be covered.
