Objective
The aim of this project is to determine the possibility and the conditions of utilization of goethite wastes in combination with inexpensive raw materials for the production of glass and glass ceramic materials suitable for commercial exploitation.
In order to accomplish the project, goethite wastes will be chemically characterized and mixed with rocks (such as tuff) and/or residues (such as marble) to reproduce the composition of basalt. The appropriate percentage of components could range, for example, between 18 to 23% of goethite waste, 63 to 73% of tuff and the rest being carbonates and nucleating and refining agents (zirconium oxide, titanium oxide and phophorous oxide). The mixture will be melted, vitrified to produce a glass and then crystallized by appropriate thermal treatments to obtain glass crystal. The thermodynamics of the process will be investigated, as well as the glassy and crystalline phases obtained. The properties of the final products will be investigated.
