Marine biofilms on stainless steel: effects, monitoring and prevention

Objectif

This project is devoted to the study of marine biofilms, their effects on corrosion behaviour of stainless steels, and their electrochemical monitoring and prevention. The aims of the
project are:

- to enhance the understanding of the mechanisms giving
rise to the biofilm formation and causing corrosion
behaviour on metals in marine use and in particular on
stainless steels;

- to establish the effects of the temperatures (till 40(C) on the biofilm corrosive consequences on stainless
steels;

- to develop monitoring techniques able to signal, in real time and in situ, the biofilm growth and therefore to
rationalize the management of antifouling interventions
in industrial plants;

- to test and assess chemical or biological antifouling
treatments alternative to chlorination, less harmful to
the environment;

- to develop laboratory methods for the rapid and
meaningful selection of stainless steels suitable for
marine applications.

The project will also undertake analytical micrographic
characterization of biofilms by means of electrochemical
measurements such as Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy
(EIS), galvanic couplements and with surface techniques such as X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Glow Discharge Spectroscopy (GDS).
