Sea current sensor

Objective

The aim of this project is to design a new generation of
acoustic arrays to improve the performance of present Doppler current profilers. In addition, this array will be able to
satisfy other requirements of oceanographic echosounders,
acoustic data transmission systems, range meters, etc. More
specifically, the objective is to significantly improve the
present instruments regarding the following aspects: an
extension of the accessible height of water (from 85% to 98%), an accuracy improvement of more than 50%, and an easy set up (mainly by reducing the dimensions of the array by about 50%). To achieve these objectives, a phased array antenna will be
studied.

First the general architecture, design and development of the array processing electronics will be defined, and will be
followed by modelling, designing and building the acoustic
array. A main aspect is the reduction of sidelobe levels and the optimization of the broadband characteristics.
