Objective
The general objective of the MEDCOAST project is to contribute to the development of 3-D small-scale modelling technology and 3-D modelling strategies to be applied to deep coastal waters in non-tidal seas (mainly the Mediterranean Sea). Specific objectives of the project are:
- to better understand the hydrodynamic evolution of Mediterranean deep coastal bays through measurement survey analysis, and inter- comparison with numerical modelling investigations;
- to test whether recent advances in the 3-D modelling technology is able to represent these complex and intricated hydrodynamic effects;
- to investigate, to define, to test and to validate improvements in 3-D modelling tools and as importantly in modelling strategies for the above-mentioned application cases;
- connections between coastal and large-scale 3-D models will be investigated.
Four existing 3-D hydrodynamical modelling systems, commonly used for shallow water tidal modelling, will be the basis of the project. They cover a significative range of assumptions, formulation of boundary conditions and numerical techniques in the present 3-D hydrodynamic modelling technology.
Guidelines, minimum requirements of the 3-D modelling approach for deep coastal waters and modelling strategy will be delivered by the project. Connections between coastal and large-scale 3-D models will be investigated.
