Static and cyclic behaviour of loose and medium silt and sand samples in the low-stress region (15- 50 kPa) with respect to un-drained behaviour and liquefaction potential has been investigated. Tests have been carried out in a static/cyclic triaxial cell with measurements of axial and radial stress, axial strain and internal pore pressure. The results can be used to make improved assessment of possible failure, scour protection, and related design calculations, and therefore will contribute to the development of improved predictive capabilities of engineering tools. The results can be used by coastal authorities, consulting companies, research organizations, universities and research companies.
The sediment behaviour is an important factor with regard to scour. A liquefied soil will be more susceptible to larger scour. The liquefaction of soil is determined by the variation of the bottom pressure. This study has focussed on the bottom pressure in the vicinity of wave breaking (plunging) in shallow waters. Different numerical schemes have been tested to calculate the surface elevation, wave kinematics and bottom pressures. Laboratory experiments have also been performed to measure the kinematics and bottom pressure of plunging breakers on smooth impermeable slopes. The results of this study have been used to calculate wave induced pore pressures. The results can be used to make improved assessment of scour potential, scour protection, and. related design calculations, and therefore will contribute to the development of Improved predictive capabilities of engineering tools. The results can be used by coastal authorities, consulting companies, research organizations, universities and research companies.
