Objective
We propose to take a completely new approach to developing environmentally friendly antifouling paints using Marine Biotechnology. We have developed new methods for rapid and relatively cheap screening of marine bacteria for the production of antifouling chemicals. These antifouling chemicals will be extracted and incorporated into newly developed water based paints to provide safe, and effective antifouling technology to the marine industrial sector. The feasibility study has shown the potential of this approach since five strains of bacteria have been obtained which produce potent antifouling compounds. Furthermore, when these compounds are incorporated into paint formulations they retain their activity and are also more active than commercial antifouling paints when assayed in the laboratory. Further research is necessary to investigate the long term activity of these compounds, to find additional compounds with improved performance and to develop commercial paints for manufacture which incorporate these new chemicals. The approach is different to other work in the field since it uses microbial extracts (which are cheap to produce) rather than natural products from complex species such as marine sponges. It is difficult and unethical to obtain these species in large quantities. This approach also avoids costs and difficulties associated with chemical synthesis of active compounds or their derivatives, an approach which is also very slow. Following commercial exploitation a return on investment within two years is expected due to the high demand for new less toxic marine antifouling products. The project brings together European paint manufacturers, and marine biomass production specialists and allows interaction with internationally recognised research partners in Marine Biotechnology an area of strategic importance within the European Union.
