Geophysical and Oceanographic Station for Abyssal Research - 2nd Phase: Deep Sea Scientific Mission

Objective

GEOSTAR 2 main goal is to perform the first long-term scientific mission of a geophysical and oceanographic observatory in deep Mediterranean Sea, down to 3500 metres of water depth. For this purpose, the prototype of the deep sea observatory developed and tested in the ongoing GEOSTAR first phase project (contract n° MAS3-CT95-0007) will be made available and appropriately enhanced to meet scientific mission requirements. GEOSTAR 2 constitutes the crucial step of a gradual progressive technological development, started with first phase of GEOSTAR, and pointing towards the set up of deep sea observatory networks. GEOSTAR: 2 will be based on the enhancement of the components developed in the first phase, and the demonstration of the full concept during a long-term mission in deep sea. GEOSTAR 2 is conceived to demonstrate through a scientific mission in deep water the possibility to collect long series of reliable scientific data in Geophysics, Geochemistry and Physical Oceanography. This result will be reached on four basic phasess * Adaptations of the GEOSTAR prototype according to the results of the shallow water tests (which conclude the first phase project) and technological enhancements of the prototype to operate for about one year in actual deep se conditions. * Development of a near real-time and permanent two way communication system to increase the quantity of data transmitted to the land. This communication system is required by the great amount of data produced by sensors and will give also the possibility of sending commands directly from shore station to bottom one. * Planning, set-up and execution of scientific mission with the long-term monitoring of geophysical, geochemical and oceanographic parameters in deep s conditions. This phase includes also the testing and adaptation to marine application of innovative instruments originally designed for space. * Data retrieval, management, interpretation and their organisation in related open databases. At the completion of the proposed project, such a deep-sea observatory - able to operate in autonomous mode - will be qualified and made available for further long-term scientific missions also in extreme marine environments.
