Objective
Acoustic tomography transceivers will be expanded in their technical capabilities to include beam inclination detection and improved signal processing.
During the winter of 1991-92 a field experiment will be carried out in the Gulf of Lions, western Mediterranean, to apply acoustic tomography with the improved instrumentation to measure the hydrographic changes associated with the deep water formation. The line integral of Doppler velocities measured around instrument combinations will be used to determine area integrated relative vorticity. Verification measurements will be obtained by moored current meter stations and ship surveys. Work on improved acoustic modelling and nonlinear inverse techniques will be carried out in parallel and be used in the interpretation of experimental data.
