A COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN ENVIRONMENT FOR UNDERWATER ACOUSTIC TRANSDUCERS FOR CIVILIAN MARINE SCIENTIFIC AND ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS

Objetivo

TRANSCAD is a personal computer based modelling software for acoustic transducers. It combines the power of sophisticated modelling techniques (finite element method and boundary element method) with a very friendly and efficient graphics user interface (GUI) using multiwindowing. TRANSCAD also includes simpler, but still very efficient, modelling techniques such as 'equivalent electrical network' which speeds up the design phase. The software is fitted with a materials database which saves the user the tedious task of entering all the material characteristics. TRANSCAD models can also include a matching network. All typical transducer characteristics can be computed and visualized in the corresponding display windows. These include admittance curves, beam patterns, near field pressure and intensity and sound level.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This project will provide a powerful, widely available, readily affordable and easily used computer-aided environment and a comprehensive materials database for the design of acoustic transducers and their associated drive and receive circuitry.
This project will dramatically upgrade the software suite, known as TRANSCAD, to include new, more accurate transducer models (transmission line models, Finite Element and Boundary Element Methods). Selected transducer designs will be fabricated and tested to check the quality of the modelling software.
Optimisation software will be added to enable TRANSCAD to automatically refine the structural specification of a transducer, to meet required performance specifications. A suitable workstation will be selected and enhanced by means of parallel-processing hardware. This project will also enhance an existing materials database which will include information on new composite materials.
