COMBINED SENSOR AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY FOR SUBSEA POSITIONING, IMAGING AND CONTROL FOR TASK IMPLEMENTATION

Objective

The main objective of the programme is to enhance the capability of existing commercial remotely operated and free swimming vehicles (ROVsFSVs) to undertake a range of scientific and industrial tasks such as sea bed surveying, scientific data collection and mining. This main objective can be achieved only by solving several technological problems. Key technological areas of networking, vision, positioning and control will be investigated by using modern computers and electronics in order to achieve these aims.
To use present commercial remote operated vehicles to carry out subsea tasks requires a high level of sophistication which can only be achieved by technology enhancements. A research program has been undertaken to enhance the following technologies; vision, networking, manipulators and control. All the systems have been developed around the transputer and have been integrated on a specially designed experimental remote operated vehicle (Aquasphere). This system is being used for a task of object identification, location and recovery which has been identified as a suitable demonstrator task for this technology.
Tasks include RTD on the following: 1) a 3d real time vision system for undertaking subsea tasks; 2) an on-board networking and data acquisition system for collecting scientific information from a multitude of sensors; 3) a computer controller using parallel processing devices for a commercial robot arm manipulator; 4) a computer system to control the position of a ROV in order to allow it to undertake subsea tasks.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
