Objective
PAH are included in the black list of EC-directive 76/464/EEC owing to the quantities used and discharged, and their toxicological properties. For environmental management, PAH are frequently determined in fresh water sediments. Comparison of the degree of PAH-contamination between different countries is virtually impossible owing to interlaboratory differences. They can be minimized with the use of a freshwater sediment reference material. The objective of this project is to produce a sediment reference material certified for various polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
The project involves the following six major tasks:
- collection of the raw sediment material;
- pre-treatment involving homogenization and bottling;
- homogeneity study;
- stability study;
- organisation of the certification campaign of eight PAH: pyrene, ben(a)anthracene, beno(b)fluoranthene, benzo(k)fluoranthene, benzo(a)pyrene, indeno(1,2,3?-cd)pyrene, benzo(b)naphto(2,1-d)thiophene;
- technical and statistical evaluation of the data and writing of the certification report.
The material has already been prepared and stabilized.
