Development of methods for the determination of planar chlorobiphenyls in environmental matrices

Objectif

Planar Chlorobiphenyls are highly toxic and are known to target biological systems at the sub-cellular level leading to effects on immune response and physiological development.
These compounds are being incorporated into the legislation of member states with regard to maximum acceptable concentrations (MAC) and toxic equivalence concentrations (TEC) in environmental matrices and food. They also form part of the requirements for Marine Monitoring programmes. For these reasons an adequate supply of reference materials are required but prior to this it is essential to have the necessary analytical methodology to certify these materials. Previous BCR programmes have used quite large groups in intercomparisons to develop and validate the methods. This project, will investigate, test, validate and recommend suitable methods to measure these planar CBs to the required standard for certification. The project will undertake a critical review of all information on methodology and select the most appropriate techniques. This will include sample extraction including super-critical fluid, specialised clean-up techniques, multidimensional chromatography and mass spectrometry. The methods will be fully evaluated in a small intercomparison and recommendations made on the most suitable techniques for certification purposes.
