Exploitable results

The toxicity of methyl-mercury is a widely recognized problem. This compound is currently determined in fish, and many laboratories now monitor the contents of this compound in sediments. This project aimed to produced a CRM of sediment certified for methyl-mercury, for the quality control of the laboratory determination. The programme involved: -Collection of sediments from different areas and selection of the most suitable sample -Pre-treatment, involving the use of different alternatives including gamma-irradiation and stabilization procedures -Homogeneity studies -Long term stability studies CRM 580 was produced, and now available from BCR, Geel, Belgium. The use of the CRM enables quality control of environmental samples, which has significant effects on environmental monitoring.
