Calibration of large artefacts

Objetivo

A major step in ensuring traceability of the measurements carried out by coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) is the calibration of master or reference artefacts. These artefacts have two main purposes: firstly, they can be used for direct comparison with manufactured workpieces and secondly, they can be used to verify the performance of a CMM as recommended by standards (e.g. BS6808, ISO 10360). However, for artefacts of length significantly greater than one meter there are considerable problems in obtaining reference calibrations since they will be too large to fit within the working volume of compact high accuracy CMMs.

The aim of the project is therefore

1) to develop a methodology and software for the measurement and calibration of large artefacts on compact CMMs using multiple repositionings;

2) to develop a large reference artefact of 2m - 5m size, calibrated using the methodology and software from 1), suitable for verification of large CMMs;

3) to develop the methodology and software for the verification of large CMMs using the calibrated large reference artefact in 2).
