Metallurgical coke is a vital raw material in the industrial activities of the European Community. Despite recent technological advances, it remains an essential component of the blast-furnace iron making process, itself the basis of a large part of the steel making industry. In the blast furnace process, the physical properties and the chemical composition of the coke influence the furnace operation, the quality of the pig-iron produced and the energy requirements. The chemical properties of coke which are important in its influence on the above mentioned factors are its ash content, calorific value, carbon, hydrogen and sulfur contents, and to a minor extent, nitrogen and phosphorus. Due to the depletion of stocks manufactured in the 1970's, new cokes were manufactured and their ash, carbon, hydrogen and sulfur contents were ascertained in order for the samples to be submitted to BCR as certified reference materials. The stated objectives were partially achieved in the duration of the project, and full realization is anticipated to take place in mid-1998, subject to acceptance of the final report by the relevant committee.
