Certification of the PAH content in coconutoil RMs

Exploitable results

General Information : PAHs develop mainly during the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels and other materials. Via the smoke and exhaust gases of automobiles, power stations, incineration plants and burning of houses they are released into the environment. Today they are spread nearly everywhere and reach our food via the exposition paths air and soil. Contamination of food with PAHs is not only caused by the pollution, but also by certain types of food preparation such as smoking, roasting, grilling etc. In the case of vegetable oils and fats, the PAH contamination can be explained by drying of the oil seeds on open fire. Since some representatives of this compound class are carcinogen and thus strongly toxic, the control of the PAHs in environmental matrices including food is of great importance. They are therefore also included in the 'black' list of the EC Directive 76/464/EEC. This project aims to the certification of the contents of six selected PAHs in two coconut oil reference materials by an interlaboratory exercise. These materials had been prepared by RIVM (Bilthoven, NL) under a previous contract with the Commission and their stability and homogeneity were tested. The objective is therefore to make such reference material available for the validation of analytical methods and the ultimate objective is the agreement of quality criteria for the acceptance of the analytical results for certification. The principal tasks planned are the collaborative measurements for: -. Certification of a blank coconut oil, virtually free of PAHs for the determination of the detection limit, recovery rates and for background correction. -. Certification of PAH contents of a spiked coconut oil. Achievements : The certified values for coconut oil RM 458 which are the unweighted mean of p accepted mean values, independently obtained by p laboratories and their uncertainties are reported
