Objective
THE OBJECTIVE OF RESEARCH IS THE REDUCTION OF FIBRE CONTENT OF PRINTING PAPERS WITHOUT LOSS OF QUALITY BY ADDITION OF LOW COST, OPTIMISED FILLERS.
IN THE PRODUCTION OF PRINTING PAPERS FILLERS ARE USED TO GET GOOD PRINTABILITY, ESPECIALLY OPACITY, SMOOTHNESS AND GLOSS, AND TO REDUCE PRODUCTION COSTS. BUT THE USE OF FILLERS REDUCES THE STRENGTH OF THE PAPERS AND THEREFORE THE RUNABILITY, I. E. THE PERFORMANCE OF PAPER IN THE PRINTING PRESS, LIMITS THE DEGREE OF USAGE OF FILLERS.
A FINER FILLER NORMALLY REDUCES THE STRENGTH MORE THAN A COARSER FILLER. BUT THE FINER FILLER OFTEN IS NEEDED BECAUSE OF PRINTABILITY.
SOME PREVIOUS TESTS HAVE SHOWN THAT THERE EXISTS AN OPTIMUM OF THE PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION, WHICH DEPENDS ON THE TYPE OF THE FILLER OR FILLER MIXTURE AND THE PRINTING PROCESS. THE SHAPE OF THE FILLER (PLATE OR SPHERICAL) IS OF IMPORTANCE TOO.
TO EVALUATE THESE INFLUENCES, THE FILLER OR FILLER MIXTURE (E. G.
CLAY AND CALCIUM CARBONATE) WILL BE CHARACTERISED BY MODERN METHODS, I. E. DETERMINATION OF PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION CURVE BY SEDIMENTATION (SEDIGRAF) AND OPTICAL MEANS (LASERGRANULOMETER) BY DETERMINATION OF VISCOSITY AND BY REM PHOTOGRAPHS.
WITH THE DIFFERENT FILLERS (COMMERCIAL ONES AND SPECIALLY PREPARED ONES) PLUS CHEMICAL AND MECHANICAL PULPS, SHEETS WILL BE PRODUCED AND TESTED FOR STRENGTH AND PRINTABILITY FOR THE GRAVURE AND OFFSET PROCESSES.
A DEVICE FOR SHEET SPLITTING WILL BE DEVELOPED TO PRODUCE AT LEAST 16 SECTIONS FROM ONE SHEET WITH THE AIM TO GET THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE FILLER ACROSS THE THICKNESS OF THE SHEET.
BY REM PHOTOGRAPHS AND BY THE USE OF A MERCURY METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF THE INTEGRATED POROUS STRUCTURE THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE SHEET WILL BE CHARACTERISED.
WITH THE RESULTS OF THESE INVESTIGATIONS AVAILABLE THE COMPOSITION OF THE FILLERS FOR DIFFERENT PAPER GRADES CAN BE OPTIMISED.
THE RESULT WILL BE A HIGHER DEGREE OF FILLER USAGE, LOWER COSTS FOR THE PAPER PRODUCTION WITH EQUAL OR BETTER QUALITY OF THE PAPER AND IN SOME CASES THE POSSIBILITY TO REDUCE THE GRAMMAGE OF THE PAPER.
THIS MEANS: LESS WOOD IS NEEDED FOR THE SAME PAPER SURFACE AREA.
