Objective
METHODS OF PROPAGATION OF THE SPECIES BY TISSUE CULTURE WILL BE IMPROVED WITH THE AIM TO ALLOW LARGE SCALE PROPAGATION. STARTING FROM SPECIES WHERE SOME EXPERIENCE ALREADY EXISTS (PRUNUS, MALUS, ACER AND BETULA). THE WORK WILL PROCEED TO MORE DIFFICULT BUT ECONOMICALLY IMPORTANT SPECIES LIKE OAK AND BEECH. THESE METHODS WILL BE USED TO PROPAGATE LIMITED AVAILABLE BRED MATERIAL ON A BROADER BASE AND TO CONTINUE THE PROPAGATION WITH CONVENTIONAL METHODS (CUTTINGS, SEED) LATER ON IN THE COURSE OF THE BREEDING PROGRAM.
AT THE SAME TIME THE METHODS OF TISSUE CULTURE WILL BE USED FOR THE STUDY ON AGEING AND REJUVENATION WITH DIFFERENT SPECIES.
THE FINAL AIM IS TO OPTIMIZE BREEDING STRATEGIES WITH IMPORTANT FOREST TREE SPECIES BY INCLUDING TISSUE CULTURE AS AN ADDITIONAL TOOL TO ENSURE RAPID TRANSFER OF RESULTS FROM BREEDING TO FORESTRY APPLICATION AND SO INCREASING WOOD PRODUCTION.
THE PRECONDITIONS FOR THIS APPROACH ARE OPTIMAL SINCE BREEDING WORK WITH THE RESPECTIVE SPECIES HAS BEEN CONDUCTED IN THIS INSTITUTE FOR A LONG TIME AND MORE OR LESS ADVANCED MATERIAL IS AVAILABLE.
