Objective
TO OBTAIN PRELIMINARY PROCESS CHARACTERISTICS OF AN INDUSTRIAL UNIT OF PRODUCTION OF CARBOHYDRATES FROM RAW UNBARKED WOOD CHIPS (RUWC) WHICH CANNOT BE USED BY THE PAPER INDUSTRY.
THE OPTIMIZATION AND CONTROL OF A DILUTE, HOT SULFURIC ACID HYDROLYSIS REACTOR IS TIED TO THE ACCURATE KNOWLEDGE OF THE HEMICELLULOSE AND CELLULOSE HYDROLYSIS KINETIC RATE CONSTANTS, OF THE CARBOHYDRATE DEGRADATION KINETIC RATE CONSTANTS, OF THE CARBOHYDRATE DIFFUSION TIME WITHIN THE MATERIAL, AND OF THE TRANSIENT BED PACKING PHENOMENA AS HYDROLYSIS PROCEEDS.
TASK 1 : OBTAINMENT OF CARBOHYDRATE DIFFUSION LAWS WITHIN RUWC. OBTAINMENT OF HEMICELLULOSE AND CELLULOSE HYDROLYSIS AND DEGRADATION KINETIC RATE CONSTANTS WHICH ARE TYPICAL OF RUWC MATERIAL IN LABORATORY REACTOR.
TASK 2 : BUILDING, TESTING AND OPTIMIZATION ON A SEMI-CONTINUOUS PLANT REACTOR OF A NUMERICAL MODEL WHICH DESCRIBES RUWC HYDROLYSIS VIA THE BERTIN-SNEA(P) PROCESS. THE MODEL WILL USE CONSTANTS AS FOUND WITHIN TASK 1. DETERMINATION OF OPTIMAL HYDROLYSIS CONTROL PARAMETERS (ACIDITY, RESIDENCE TIME, BED TEMPERATURE, ETC ...)
TASK 3 : EXPERIMENTAL TESTS ON A SEMI-CONTINUOUS PILOT PLANT REACTOR TO CHARACTERIZE OPTIMAL HYDROLYSIS CONTROL PARAMETERS. COMPARISON AND ADJUSTMENT OF THE MATHEMATICAL MODEL TO OBTAIN PRELIMINARY PROCESS CHARACTERISTICS (20 TO 30 T/DAY CONTINUOUS PILOT PLANT AND 1 000 T/DAY INDUSTRIAL UNIT) VIA THE BERTIN-SNEA(P) PROCESS (CONTINUOUS COUNTER-CURRENT PERCOLATION REACTOR).
