PAPER DRYING UNDER Z-DIRECTION RESTRAINT TO IMPROVE THE STRENGTH PROPERTIES OF THE SHORT-FIBRE HIGH YIELD PULPS

Objective

THIS STUDY IS INTENDED TO ASSESS WHETHER THE APPLICATION OF THE PROCESS OF PAPER DRYING UNDER Z-DIRECTION RESTRAINT TO HIGH YIELD SHORT FIBRE PULPS OF LOW OR MEDIUM GRADE IS ABLE TO IMPROVE, AND TO WHAT EXTENT, THOSE PAPER WHICH ARE PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT FOR USE IN LINERBOARD AND CORRUGATING MEDIUM.

THE PROPOSAL OF THIS RESEARCH HAS ITS BACKGROUND IN IMPORTANT STUDIES, BOTH FUNDAMENTAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL, WHICH WERE PERFORMED IN THE PAST YEARS AT THE FOREST PRODUCTS LABORATORY IN MADISON, WIS. (USA) AND AT THE SWEDISH FOREST PRODUCTS RESEARCH LABORATORY IN STOCKHOLM.

THE RESULTS OF THESE STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT THE DRYING OF PAPER UNDER Z-DIRECTION RESTRAINT (COMMONLY CALLED "PRESS DRYING") RESULTS IN MARKED IMPROVEMENTS OF THE STRENGTH PROPERTIES, OF SOME PARTICULAR INPORTANCE WHEN THE PULPS ARE USED IN LINERBOARDS. THE IMPROVEMENTS, OBTAINED FROM THE STUDIES CARRIED OUT AT THE FOREST PRODUCTS LABORATORY, WERE ESPECIALLY INTERESTING FOR HIGH YIELD PULPS FROM NORTH AMERICAN HARDWOODS. THE RESEARCH IS INTENDED TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTS THAT PRESS DRYING CAUSES ON THOSE PAPER PROPERTIES WHICH ARE IMPORTANT FOR USE IN LINERBOARD AND CORRUGATING MEDIUM. A CONSIDERABLE IMPROVEMENT OF THESE PAPER PROPERTIES WOULD MEAN EITHER THE USE OF LOWER GRADE (HENCE CHEAPER) FURNISHES OR A DECREASE OF PAPER GRAMMAGE WITH THE FOLLOWING BENEFITS. THE FIBROUS RAW MATERIALS TO BE EVALUATED WOULD BE:

A- HIGH YIELD SEMICHEMICAL PULPS FROM EUROPEAN HARDWOODS (CHIMICA DEL FRIULI S.P.A.-TORVISCOSA (UDINE) AND CELLULOSA CALABRA S.P.A.-CROTONE (CATANZARO) ARE ABLE TO CO-OPERATE WITH THE SUPPLYING OF RAW MATERIALS)

B- PAPER FURNISHES OF VARIOUS GRADES COMMONLY USED BY THE ITALIAN PAPER INDUSTRY FOR THE MAKING OF LINEBOARD AND CORRUGATING MEDIUM (CARTIERE DI VERONA S.P.A.-MILANO ITALCARTA S.P.A.-PORCARI (LUCCA) AND CARTORRE S.P.A.-VOGHERA (PAVIA) HAVE DECLARED THEIR INTEREST TO CO-OPERATE BOTH WITH THE SUPPLYING OF RAW MATERIALS AND IN THE EVALUATION OF THE QUALITY OF THE PAPERS.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
