THE USE OF 50 MM INSTEAD OF 33-40 MM LAMELLAE IN BEAMS

Objective

THE OBJECTIVE OF THE RESEARCH IS TO ECONOMIZE THE USE OF IMPORTED SPRUCE IN LOAD BEARING STRUCTURES BY USING 50 MM LAMELLAE INSTEAD OF THE MAXIMAL ALLOWED 33 MM. IF TECHNICALLY FEASIBLE APPROXIMATELY 5% PROFIT IN THE USE OF WOOD CAN BE OBTAINED.

THE RESEARCH IS DIVIDED INTO TWO PARTS. THE FIRST PART: PRELIMINARY TESTS AT TNO (CONCERNING THE BEHAVIOUR UNDER VARIOUS CLIMATE CONDITIONS) AND A SECOND PART - ON FULL SCALE BASIS - AT THE TECHNICAL LABORATORY IN BRUSSELS. THE FIRST PART WILL BE FINISHED IN FEBRUARY 1984 AND THE SECOND IN THE LATTER PART PART OF 1985. IT IS STATED THAT THERE ARE DIFFERENCES IN MOISTURE CONTENT BETWEEN THE LAMELLAE DRIED IN THE FACTORIES AND THOSE DRIED IN THE LABORATORY CAUSED BY THE DRYING PROCESS. FURTHERMORE THERE ARE DIFFERENCES IN BEHAVIOUR OF THE LAMELLAE WHEN USED IN HORIZONTAL LAMINATED WOOD AND THOSE IN VERTICAL LAMINATED WOOD.
