DEVELOPMENT OF AN EC-PROGRAMME FOR TESTING THE SUSCEPTIBILITY OF POPLAR CLONES TO BACTERIAL CANKER.

Objective



THE FOLLOWING 4 INSTITUTES WILL COOPERATE:INRA, ANGERS FRANCE(OVERALL COORDINATION), GOVERMENT RESEARCH INST.GERAARDSBERGEN BELGIUM, F.I. HANN-MUENCHEN,FRG.

POPLAR IS OF GREAT ECONOMIC SIGNIFICANCE IN EC-MEMBER STATES. ITS WOOD HAS A RANGE OF INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS, SUCH AS FIBRE MASS PRODUCTION AND THE MANUFACTURING OF PAPER AND MATCHES.
BACTERIAL CANKER, CAUSED BY THE BACTERIUM XANTHOMONAS POPULI SUBSP.POPULI IS ONE OF THE MOST SERIOUS DISEASES OF THIS TREE SPECIES. THE BRANCHES AND STEMS OF SUSCEPTIBLE CLONES WILL BECOME COVERED WITH CANKERS, GROWTH IS REDUCED AND THE TREES ARE FINALLY KILLED. THIS DISEASE IS A CONSTANT THREAT TO POPLAR CULTURE IN A NUMBER OF EC-COUNTRIES.
THE BEST CONTROL METHOD IS THE SELECTION AND BREEDING OF RESISTANT CLONES. CONSEQUENTLY BEFORE NEWLY SELECTED CLONES ARE PLANTED ON A LARGE SCALE, THEY HAVE TO BE TESTED FOR RESISTANCE TO BACTERIAL CANKER IN ORDER TO PREVENT SERIOUS FINANCIAL LOSSES.
TESTING IS CARRIED OUT IN VARIOUS EC-MEMBER STATES. WHEN ONE COUNTRY RELEASES A NEW CLONE IT MAY ESSENTIALLY ALSO BE PLANTED IN OTHER EC-COUNTRIES. HOWEVER, A CLONE WHICH PROVES RESISTANT IN ONE COUNTRY MAY BE SUSCEPTIBLE IN ANOTHER ONE.
THIS IS DUE TO DIFFERENT CLIMATIC CONDITIONS, TO THE EXISTENCE OF BACTERIAL STRAINS WITH DIFFERENT VIRULANCE, TO DIFFERENT TESTING METHODS, TIMES OF INOCULATION, ETC...
THIS IS THE REASON WHY TESTING RESISTANCE OF POPLARS TO BACTERIAL CANKER HAS TO BE COORDINATED WITHIN EC. EXISTING METHODS SHOULD BE STANDARDIZED, NEW METHODS DEVELOPED AND RESEARCH COORDINATED .
IT IS NOW PROPOSED TO START ONE EC-PROGRAMME FOR TESTING THE SUSCEPTIBILITY OF POPLAR CLONES TO BACTERIAL CANKER. ALL PROMISING NEW SELECTIONS FROM DIFFERENT COUNTRIES WILL BE COLLECTED IN ONE INTERNATIONAL EXPERIMENT. THE EXPERIMENTAL FIELDS WILL BE LAID OUT AT THE SAME TIME IN ALL PARTICIPATING COUNTRIES.
TREES WILL BE TESTED SIMULTANEOUSLY USING VARIOUS METHODS ACCORDING TO THE MOST RECENT VIEWS.
IN THIS WAY AN INSIGHT WILL BE OBTAINED INTO THE RESISTANCE OF CLONES UNDER WESTERN-EUROPEAN CONDITIONS. RESEARCH WILL BE MORE EFFICIENT, NEW CLONES BECOME AVAILABLE EARLIER AND THE RISK OF THEIR BEING ATTACKED BY BACTERIAL CANKER MINIMIZED.
