VALORIZATION OF YOUNG SPRUCE TREES BY LAMINATION

Objective

SPRUCE, A MAIN SOFTWOOD
- SPECIFICECIES LARGELY USED FOR RE-AFFORESTATION THROUGHOUT THE EEC COMMUNITY, PRESENTLY REPRESENTS 30% OF THE BELGIAN NATIONAL FOREST.
FIRST THINNINGS ARE STARTING IN THESE STANDS ALREADY PRODUCING A LARGE AMOUNT OF SMALL AND GENERALLY LOW GRADED LOGS.
IT IS THEREFORE ESSENTIAL TO PROMOTE THE VALORIZATION OF THIS KIND OF RAW MATERIAL WHICH WILL INCREASE MORE AND MORE IN THE NEAR FUTURE.
AMONG ALL THE POSSIBILITIES OF PROCESSING, MICRO-LAMINATION SEEMS TO BE THE MOST PROMISING IN ALLOWING THE MANUFACTURE OF AN UP-GRADED AND MORE HOMOGENEOUS PRODUCT FROM SMALL DIAMETER LOGS OF LOW COST. THE RESEARCH PROGRAMME INVOLVES DIFFERENT INVESTIGATIONS SUMMARIZED HEREAFTER :

1. IDENTIFICATION AND SAMPLING OF REPRESENTATIVE MATERIAL :
3 STANDS IN BELGIUM AND 1 STAND IN LUXEMBOURG,

2. RAW MATERIAL PROCESSING :
- MATERIAL FROM BELGIUM AND LUXEMBOURG :
.SAWING IN SOLID WOOD CLEAR SPECIMEN (FOR STANDARD COMPARISONS) AND IN LAMINAE
. CIRCULAR SLICING IN LAMINAE
- MATERIAL FROM GERMANY
. SAWING IN SOLID WOOD CLEAR SPECIMEN AND IN LAMINAE
- OTHER MATERIAL (POTENTIAL) :
. SAWED LAMINAE FROM SITKA SPRUCE TO BE CONVERTED IN MICROLAM.

3. TESTS TO BE CONDUCTED :
- ANALYSIS OF WOOD STRUCTURE, MAINLY GROWING FEATURES WITHIN THE DIFFERENT SITES SAMPLED.
- PHYSICO-MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF SOLID WOOD AND MICROLAM ON SMALL CLEAR SPECIMENS OF THE SAME STANDARD SIZE.

4. COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS OF ALL THE DATA COLLECTED :
- COMPARISON AND CORRELATION BETWEEN YOUNG SPRUCE WOOD: SPECIFIC CHARACTERISTICS AND MICROLAM PHYSICO-MECHANICAL BEHAVIOUR.
- EFFECT OF SITE QUALITY (SITE CLASS) ON SOLID WOOD AND MICROLAM PHYSICO-MECHANICAL PROPERTIES.
- INFLUENCE OF LAYER THICKNESS AND LAMINATION CUTTING SYSTEM ON MICROLAM PROPERTIES WITH REFERENCE TO SOLID WOOD.

THE PROJECT IS PART OF AN EEC COORDINATED R&D PROJECT INVOLVING:
C.T.I.B. (BELGIUM)
LIGNOTEC (FRG)
ADAM WILSON (U.K.)
TNO (NETHERLANDS)
I.I.R.S. (IRELAND)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
