INTRODUCTION OF RHIZOPHAGUS GRANDIS IN FRANCE FOR THE BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF DENDROCTONUS MICANS

Objective

BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF RHIZOPHAGUS GRANDIS, A SPECIFIC PREDATOR OF THE BARK-BEETLE, DENDROCTONUS MICANS :
1) DEVELOPMENT OF A REARING STATION IN LOZERE (FRANCE), WHERE THE PREDATOR IS TO BE RELEASED. THE INSECTS WILL COME FROM VARIOUS BELGIAN SPRUCE STANDS, OR, PREFERABLY, FROM DIFFERENT COUNTRIES IN WHICH RH. GRANDIS IS ENDEMIC (FED. REP. OF GERMANY, DENMARK, BELGIUM), TO INCREASE GENETIC DIVERSITY. THEY WILL BE REARED INDOORS, ON SPRUCE LOGS INFESTED WITH THE BARK-BEETLE, AT ROOM TEMPERATURE. THIS PART OF THE PROJECT WILL BE UNDERTAKEN BY THE STAFF OF THE NATIONAL PARK OF CEVENNES, WITH THE HELP OF THE STATION DE ZOOLOGIE APPLIQUEE OF THE INRA IN AVIGNON.
REARING ON ARTIFICIAL DIETS WILL BE ATTEMPTED, DEPENDING ON THE OUTCOME OF CURRENT LABORATORY EXPERIMENT IN BRUSSELS.

2)PREDATORS WILL BE RELEASED IN AREAS ALREADY DEFINED. THIS WILL OCCUR IN MAY-JUNE. ADULT AND LARVAL RH. GRANDIS WILL BE RELEASED IN THE VICINITY OF INFESTED TREES, UNDER THE CONTROL OF THIS LABORATORY.

3) MONITORING OF THE PREDATORS'DISPERSAL WILL BE ATTEMPTED IN TWO WAYS :

3.1 SAMPLINGS WILL BE MADE AMONG BARK-BEETLES' BROOD SYSTEMS, IN ORDER TO DETECT THE PRESENCE OF PREDATORS,
3.2. TRAPPING WILL BE ATTEMPTED, USING AS BAIT THE VOLATILE COMPOUNDS RESPONSIBLE FOR PREY LOCATION BY RH. GRANDIS. CURRENT BEHAVIOURAL AND ELECTROPHYSIOLOGICAL RESEARCH SHOULD PERMIT RAPID DETERMINATION OF WHICH CHEMICALS OR MIXTURES ARE INVOLVED.

4) ASSESMENT OF THE IMPACT OF PREDATION BY RH. GRANDIS WILL BE MADE BY FIELD OBSERVATIONS AND LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS. SAMPLINGS WILL BE MADE IN CONTROL-AREAS, TO ALLOW COMPARISONS WITH SAMPLINGS IN RELEASE AREAS.
LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS, WHICH ARE RUN CURRENTLY, WILL BE CONTINUED AND DEVELOPED.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
