Objective
HAVING RESEARCHED THE AREA OF SUPPLY AND LIKELY COST OF SMALL DIAMETER TIMBER IN THE CATCHMENT AREA OF THE SAWMILL, THE NEXT STEP IS TO INVESTIGATE THE MARKET POTENTIAL FOR THE SALE OF PRODUCTS TO IDENTIFY THE LIKELY CUSTOMERS FOR THE PALLETWOOD, MINING TIMBER, BUILDING TIMBER AND THE PACKAGING MATERIALS PRODUCED.
IT IS THEN NECESSARY TO RESEARCH INTO ALL OF THE LATEST TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENTS AROUND THE WORLD IN SAWMILLING TECHNIQUES. THIS WILL INCLUDE MACHINERY, AUTOMATION, WASTE RECOVERY, HANDLING AND MEASUREMENT SYSTEMS AND MANUFACTURING PROCESSES, INCLUDING THE APPLICATION OF MICROPROCESSORS. THE OBJECTIVE IS TO COMBINE ALL OF THESE ELEMENTS AND TO DESIGN A NEW SYSTEM FOR PROCESSING SMALL DIAMETER ROUNDWOOD WHICH WILL BE UNIQUE AND ACHIEVE VAST IMPROVEMENT IN TIMBER UTILISATION AND SAWMILL EFFICIENCY.
A CONSULTANT WILL BE ENGAGED TO DESIGN THE SYSTEM AND PRODUCE PRACTICAL PLANS FOR CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW SAWMILL WHICH WILL EMBODY THE NEW PROCESSING TECHNIQUES.
WHEN THE SAWMILL IS COMPLETED IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO EMBARK UPON A PROJECT TO DEVELOP THE UNTRIED TECHNIQUES FOR PRACTICAL USE TO ACHIEVE THE OPTIMUM EFFICIENCIES. IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO TRAIN MANAGEMENT AND OPERATORS ON THE NEW METHODS, SINCE THERE IS NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE OF A SIMILAR PROCESS.
THE NEW TECHNIQUES WILL DRASTICALLY REDUCE WASTE THUS INCREASING THE YIELD FROM EACH LOG.
BENEFITS WILL ACCRUE TO THE E.E.C. BY REDUCTION OF PALLETWOOD IMPORTS. THE FOREST WILL BENEFIT FROM BETTER MARKETS FOR SMALL DIAMETER WOOD PREVIOUSLY SOLD CHEAPLY FOR PULP.
THE SAWMILLS WILL BENEFIT BY GREATLY IMPROVED EFFICIENCY AND PRODUCTIVITY.
