Objective
TO PRODUCE A COMMERCIALLY VIABLE PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF VALUABLE CHEMICALS FROM WOOD AND WOOD RELATED PRODUCTS.
THE AIM OF THIS PROJECT IS TO ENABLE THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A DEMONSTRATION PLANT CAPABLE OF PROVIDING PRODUCTION QUANTITIES OF MATERIAL FOR PROCESSING BY FERMENTATION OR VIA THE FURAN CHEMISTRY ROUTE.
THE PROPOSED WORK IS IN THE AREA OF HYDROLYSIS OF CELLULOSIC MATERIALS TO YIELD SUGARS. THE SUGARS SO DERIVED WILL BE FURTHER USED TO PROVIDE SUBSTRATES FOR PRODUCTION OF CHEMICALS BY FERMENTATION OR BY CHEMICAL SYNTHESIS.
CURRENT PROCESSES FOR HYDROLYSIS OF CELLULOSICS ARE EITHER ENZYMIC (SLOW, EXPENSIVE, SUBJECT TO PRODUCT INHIBITION) OR ACID (POOR YIELD, DIFFICULT TO CONTROL). IMPROVEMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE BY PRETREATMENTS BUT THESE ARE CUMBERSOME AND ADD TO EXPENSE.
THE PROPOSED METAL HALIDE CATALYSED PROCESS UNDER ACIDIC CONDITIONS WILL GIVE THE FOLLOWING IMPROVEMENTS:
I) HIGH YIELD
II) RAPID PROCESS
III) ABILITY TO DEAL WITH HIGH SUBSTRATE CONCENTRATION
IV) INEXPENSIVE
V) ABILITY TO USE CRUDE WASTE AS SUBSTRATE
IT IS INTENDED TO GO ON TO FURTHER OPTIMIZE THE PROCESS AT THE LABORATORY SCALE AND TO ALLOW PROCESS DESIGN TO BE FINALIZED FOR A PILOT PLANT. FURTHER LABORATORY WORK WILL ENABLE DESIGN OF PROCESSES FOR PRODUCT FORMATION FROM THE PROCESS SUGARS. THIS WILL BE IN TWO SEPARATE LINES, (A) THE FERMENTATION OF SUGARS TO GIVE CHEMICALS, E.G. AMINO ACIDS AND MICROBIALLY PRODUCED PLASTICS; (B) THE CHEMICAL CONVERSION OF THE SUGARS TO FURANS AND OTHER COMMERCIAL INTERMEDIATES.
PILOT PLANT WORK WILL BE AIMED AT THE OPTIMIZATION OF THE PROCESS WITH PARTICULAR RESPECT TO:
I) OPTIMIZATION OF REACTOR DESIGN
II) RECOVERY AND RECYCLE OF METAL SALTS
III) SEPARATION AND RECOVERY OF THE ORGANIC COMPONENTS
IV) USE OF VARIOUS LIGNOCELLULOSIC FEEDSTOCKS.
