Objective
THIS PROJECT WILL EXAMINE THE ROLE OF LIQUID AMMONIA AS A VEHICLE FOR THE IMPREGNATION OF WOOD WITH CHEMICAL SYTSTEMS FOR DIMENSIONAL STABILISATION, RESIN REINFORCEMENT, ROT-RESISTANCE, FLAME-RETARDANCY, AND OTHER DESIRABLE PROPERTIES.
AMMONIA IS CHEAP, LARGELY RECOVERABLE (AND THEREFORE NON-POLLUTING), AND AVAILABLE IN THE EEC FROM NON-PETROCHEMICAL RESOURCES. A SUCCESSFUL OUTCOME OF THE PROJECT COULD BRING BENEFITS IN HIGHER PRODUCTIVITY AND LOWER ENERGY COSTS. THE SOLVENT POWER OF LIQUID AMMONIA FOR ORGANIC AND INORGANIC SUBSTANCES SHOULD ENABLE A WIDER RANGE OF REAGENTS THAN HITHERTO TO BE APPLIED TO WOOD, WHILST ITS STRONG SWELLING ACTION ON CELLULOSE WILL ASSIST THEIR DEEPER, MORE UNIFORM PENETRATION.
INITIALLY, A LIMITED NUMBER OF WOOD SPECIES WILL BE SELECTED IN CONSULTATION WITH INDUSTRY AND TREATED WITH TYPICAL REAGENTS IN CURRENT USE OR SIMILAR ONES WITH BETTER SOLUBILITY CHARACTERISTICS. THE MORPHOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL RESPONSE OF THE WOOD WILL BE ASSESSED MICROSCOPICALLY AND ANALYTICALLY, AND ITS RELEVANT MECHANICAL AND OTHER SPECIAL PROPERTIES, E.G. DIMENSIONAL STABILITY, FLAMMABILITY, ROT-RESISTANCE, AND WATER-REPELLENCY, WILL BE MONITORED.
THE RESEARCH WILL THEN PROGRESS TO A SEARCH FOR NOVEL REAGENTS ADEQUATELY SOLUBLE IN LIQUID AMMONIA. SPECIFIC AREAS OF POTENTIAL INTEREST INCLUDE (1)FLAME-RETARDANT ORGANOHALOGEN AND ORGANO-PHOSPHOROUS COMPOUNDS; (2) LONG-CHAIN ALIPHATIC AND ORGANOSILICON COMPOUNDS TO IMPART WATER-REPELLENCY; (3)POST-CURABLE RESINS TO CONFER DIMENSIONAL STABILITY; (4) MULTIFUNCTIONAL OLIGOMERS AMENABLE TO HIGH-ENERGY RADIATION CURING.
