DEVELOPMENT OF MEANS TO INCREASE THE FILLER CONTENT OF PAPER

Objective

MEANS WILL BE FOUND AND DEVELOPED SO THAT WOODFREE PRINTINGS AND WRITINGS CAN BE MADE WITH A FILLER CONTENT OF 40%.

PAPER WILL INITIALLY BE MADE WITH FILLER CONTENTS IN THE RANGE OF 35% TO 50%. THE RESEARCH PROGRAMME WILL ASSESS THE EFFECTS OF EACH STAGE OF THE PAPERMAKING PROCESS AND IN PARTICULAR, THE CHEMICAL SYSTEMS AT THE FORMING PART OF THE PAPER MACHINE AND THE EFFECTS OF SIZE PRESS AND DRYER OPERATION, TO OVERCOME THE CONCOMITANT LOSS OF PROPERTIES. LABORATORY STUDIES WILL BE BACKED BY EXPERIMENTS USING PILOT OR PAPER MILL FACILITIES.

THE RESULTS OBTAINED WILL THEN BE REVIEWED AND APPLIED BY MAKING PAPER ON ONE OR MORE PAPER MACHINES WITH FILLER CONTENTS OF 40%. CONCURRENT WITH THESE MACHINE TRIALS, METHODS WHICH HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED FOR INCREASING FILLER CONTENT ABOVE 40% WILL BE FURTHER INVESTIGATED AND DEVELOPED.

A REPORT ON THE RESULTS OF THE WORK WILL BE WRITTEN, INCLUDING RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE WIDER IMPLEMENTATION AND USE OF THE METHODS DISCOVERED AND DEVELOPED.

IT IS ESTIMED THAT INCREASING THE FILLER CONTENT OF WOODFREE PRINTINGS AND WRITINGS BY ONLY 10% WOULD SAVE THE EEC COUNTRIES 400,000 TONNES/YEAR OF CHEMICAL WOODPULP AND PROVIDE GROSS SAVINGS OF APPROXIMATELY UKL 25/TONNE OF PAPER PRODUCED.
