Objective
THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO EVALUATE THE POTENTIAL OF DIFFUSION TREATMENTS TO PROVIDE A FIXED PRESERVATIVE SYSTEM FOR SAWN SPRUCE IN SITUATIONS OF HIGH DECAY HAZARD E.G. GROUND CONTACT.
SITKA SPRUCE IS BEING USED FOR MOST OF THE RESEARCH PROGRAMME BUT SELECTED STUDIES WILL ALSO BE UNDERTAKEN WITH NORWAY SPRUCE IN COOPERATION WITH BFA HAMBURG, BAM BERLIN, TNO (NETHERLANDS) AND TRAETEKNIK (DANMARK). THE INITIAL INVESTIGATIONS HAVE NOW BEEN COMPLETED AND A MODEL DESCRIBING AQUEOUS DIFFUSION OF MULTI-SALT PRESERVATIVES IN WOOD HAS BEEN DEVELOPED.
WOOD MOISTURE CONTENT IS CRUCIAL PARAMETER CONTROLLING THE RATE OF PRESERVATIVE DIFFUSION AND PROBLEMS ARE ANTICIPATED WITH THE LOW MOISTURE OF SPRUCE HEARTWOOD. THE EFFECT OF PRE-CONDITIONING SPRUCE (E.G. BY STEAMING) TO EQUILIBRATE MOISTURE PROFILES PRIOR TO DIFFUSION BASED PRESERVATIVE TREATMENTS IS BEING STUDIED AT PRESENT. INORGANIC AMMONIACAL PRESERVATIVE FORMULATIONS SUCH AS AMMONIACAL COPPER ARSENATE AND OTHERS WILL BE ASSESSED FOR DIFFUSION TREATMENT IN COMBINATION WITH THE PRE-CONDITIONING.
THE OVERALL PERFORMANCE OF THESE TREATMENTS FOR HIGH DECAY HAZARD USES WILL BE DETERMINED. THIS WILL INVOLVE CHEMICAL ANALYSES OF PRESERVATIVE LOADING AND DISTRIBUTION IN DIFFUSION TREATED WOOD; LEACHING STUDIES TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT OF PRESERVATIVE FIXATION;AND LABORATORY SOFT ROT, BASIDIOMYCETE AND SOIL BURIAL STUDIES TO ASSESS THE INFLUENCE ON PRESERVATIVE PERFORMANCE OF FACTORS SUCH AS LOADING, FORMULATION, PRE-CONDITIONING AND PRESERVATION PROCESS. FINALLY, PILOT TRIALS WITH COMMERCIAL SIZED MATERIAL ARE PLANNED.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
