Objective
THE OBJECTIVE IS TO LOCATE AREAS WHICH HAVE A HIGH POTENTIAL FOR FORESTRY BUT WHICH ARE MARGINAL FOR AGRICULTURE, AND TO INVESTIGATE ASPECTS OF THE SOCIAL, FINANCIAL AND INSTITUTIONAL FRAMEWORK WHICH MAY FACILITATE PRIVATE FORESTRY.
THE METHODS: THE REVISED GENERAL SOIL MAP 1980 WILL BE USED AS THE BASIS FOR INITIALLY INDICATING AREAS FOR STUDY. AREAS WITH SOILS DESIGNATED AS VERY LIMITED FOR AGRICULTURAL USE (MOSTLY LOWLAND CLAY SOILS) ARE OF MOST INTEREST. THEIR FORESTRY POTENTIAL WILL BE MEASURED USING DATA FROM THE FOREST AND WILDLIFE SERVICES FOREST INVENTORY 1978. SITKA SPRUCE WILL BE ASSESSED AS IT IS THE MOST PRODUCTIVE SPECIES ON THESE SOILS. AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION WILL BE TAKEN FROM THE FARM MANAGEMENT SURVEY OF THE AGRICULTURAL INSTITUTE. ECONOMIC COMPARISON WILL BE MADE USING THE TECHNIQUE ALREADY USED IN THE LEITRIM RESOURCE SURVEY.
THE SECOND PART OF THE PROJECT WILL CONCENTRATE ON AREAS WHERE PRIVATE FORESTRY CAN MAKE A CONTRIBUTION TO RURAL DEVELOPMENT. METHODS TO OVERCOME THE MAJOR PROBLEM OF PRIVATE FORESTRY FOR SMALL FARMERS - THE LONG DELAY IN INCOME GENERATION BETWEEN PLANTING AND FIRST THINNING (12-20 YEARS). THE SECOND PHASE OF THE PROJECT WILL EXAMINE METHODS OF OVERCOMING THIS PROBLEM.
