Objective
SYSTEMATIC COLLECTION AND INTERPRETATION OF PALEOENVIRONMENTAL AND LITHOGEOCHEMICAL DATA AS PROXIMITY INDICATORS FOR DEEPLY BURIED STRATIFORM BASE METAL DEPOSITS.
RECENT RESEARCH SUGGESTS THAT THE COMBINATION OF PALEOGEGRAPHICAL AND LITHOGEOCHEMICAL INFORMATION CAN SUCCESSFULLY BE USED TO INFER THE LOCATION OF SHALEHOSTED STRATIFORM ZN-PB-CU DEPOSITS OVER DISTANCES OF SEVERAL THOUSAND METERS.
IT IS PROPOSED TO SYSTEMATICALLY COLLECT LOCAL LITHOGEOCHEMICAL AND FACIES DATA WITHIN AREAS SELECT ON THE BASIS OF THEIR REGIONALLY FAVOURABLE PALEOGEOGRAPHIC POSITION, BY USING A FAST AND COST IN THIS METHODS IS THE ESTABLISHMENT OF COMPLETE STRATIGRAPHIC SECTIONS OF THE POTENTIAL HOST ROCKS AND THE AVAILABILITY OF HIGH QUALITY LITHOGEOCHEMICAL SAMPLES MATERIAL - A NECESSARY PREREQUISITE FOR MEANINGFUL ANALYSES IN AREAS OF POOR OR NON-EXISTANT OUTCROP.
THE EMPHASIS IS ON AREAS CONTAINING MIDDLE DEVONIAN SHALE SEQUENCES, ALTHOUGH THOSE OF LOWER AND UPPER DEVONIAN AND LOWER CARBONIFEROUS AGE ARE NOT WITHOUT SIGNIFICANT POTENTIAL. SHALE DEPOSITION DURING THESE PERIODS AND IN THE SELECTED AREAS IS CHARACTERIZED BY SPECIAL BASIN DEVELOPMENT RELATED TO SYNSEDIMENTARY FAULTING AND MINERALISING EVENTS.
THE EVALUATION OF SAMPLES BY GEOCHEMICAL ANALYSES (33 ELEMENTS, IPC ANALYSES) AND SEDIMENTOLOGICAL METHODS ATTEMPTS TO ESTABLISH SYNSEDIMENTARY METAL ENRICHMENT IN POSTULATED PALEOGEOGRAPHICALLY FAVOURABLE BASINS. THIS DATA IS GEOLOGICALLY EVALUATED USING CONVENTIONAL AND COMPUTERBASE METHODS SUBJECT TO THE FOLLOWING SEQUENCE :
1) QUALITY CONTROL OF THE ANALYSES AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF BACKGROUND VALUES;
2) SELECTION OF ELEMENTS (I.E. MN, TL, HG, NA, ZR, RB, ZN ETC.) WITH REFERENCE TO LOCAL PETROGRAPHIC PARAMETERS;
3) OVERALL GRAPHICAL PRESENTATION OF THE DATA;
4) GENETIC DETERMINATION OF ALL ANOMALIES USING CORRELATION ANALYSES AND MULTIVARIANT STATISTICS.
