DETERMINATION OF THE FACTORS CONTROLLING CHROMITE MINERALISATION, WITH SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON AIDS TO MINERAL EXPLORATION.

Objective

TO DEFINE GENETICAL CONDITIONS OF CHROMITE CONCENTRATION IN OPHIOLITIC COMPLEXES AND TO ESTABLISH THE MAGMATIC, STRUCTURAL AND CHEMICAL CONTROLS OF THIS MINERALISATION, WITH THE AIM OF DETERMINING PROSPECTION GUIDES.

THIS IS A JOINT PROJECT INVOLVING ALSO THE UNIVERSITY OF HAMBURG (CONTRACT N.MSM 019), THE OPEN UNIVERSITY (CONTRACT N.MSM108) AND THE UNIVERSITY OF COPENHAGEN (CONTRACT N. MSM 120). IT CONTINUES RESEARCH INITIATED IN OMAN AND GREECE BY THE SAME GROUPS (PRIMARY RAW MATERIALS PROGRAMME 1978-1981).

FIELD WORK BY ALL 4 GROUPS WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN NEW CALEDONIA. RESEARCH UNDER THIS CONTRACT CONCERNS THE CHEMICAL CONTROLS OF MINERALISATION. IT WILL INCLUDE:

- A STUDY OF THE CRYPTIC VARIATION BOTH IN AND BELOW THE LAYERED SERIES, HOST TO THE LAYERS AND PODS OF CHROMITE. PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE GIVEN TO THE CRYPTIC VARIATIONS IN THE HARZBURGITES UNDERLYING THE CHROMITE.

- A CRYSTALLOCHEMICAL STUDY OF THE CHROMITIE BODIES AND THEIR IMMEDIATE ENVELOPE.

- THE DETERMINATION OF RARE-EARTH CONCENTRATIONS BOTH ABOVE AND BELOW THE CHROMITE CONCENTRATIONS. ELABORATION OF POSSIBLE MODELS OF CRYSTAL FRACTIONATION AND CONSEQUENCES FOR THE GENESIS OF CHROMITE LAYERS.

- AN INVESTIGATION OF CHEMICAL DISCONTINUITIES IN THE EVOLUTION OF SERIES UNDER STUDY, THAT MAY BE USED AS GUIDELINES IN PROSPECTING FOR CHROMITE.

THE FINAL REPROT WILL INCLUDE THE ASRLIER RESULTS ON OMAN AND GREECE.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
