CUPROUS MATERIALS BENEFICIATION IN AN HYDROMETALLURGICAL PLANT

Objective



TO DEVELOP A NEW PROCESS FOR THE TREATMENT OF DIFFERENT CUPROUS MATERIALS ASSOCIATED WITH METALS ALREADY RECOVERED IN ZINC METALLURGY WITH A GOOD YIELD.

THE ZINC ELECTROLYTIC REFINING PROCESSES WERE DEVELOPED FOR THE TREATMENT OF GOOD QUALITY ZINC CONCENTRATES.

UP TO NOW THE COPPER CONTAINED IN THESE ORES WAS BADLY RECOVERED IN AN IMPURE CEMENT FORM AT 45-0/0 COPPER WHICH LEADS ELECTROLYTIC ZINC PLANTS TO LIMIT TO A MINIMUM THE COPPER CONTENT OF THE ORES.

COPPER BENEFICIATION CAN BE CONTEMPLATED PREFERENTIALLY IN THE FORM OF MARKETABLE SALTS, PARTICULARLY SULPHATES AND OXICHLORIDES.

THE PRIVILEGED TECHNICAL APPROACH WOULD CONSIST IN PRECIPITATING COPPER INTO CUPROUS CHLORIDES FORM, A PARTICULARLY INSOLUBLE SALT IN SULPHATE MEDIUM WHICH HAS ZINC ELECTROLYSIS AND

- TO MAKEIN THE AREA OF ZINC METALLURGY TWO DETERMINING ADVANTAGES :

- TO MAKE POSSIBLE THE ELIMINATION OF ASSOCIATED CHLORINE WHICH INTERFERES WITH ZINC ELECTROLYSIS AND

- TO PRECIPITATE SELECTIVELY A COPPER SALT EASY TO PURITY.

THE COPPER SALTS (SULPHATES AND OXYCHLORIDES) ARE USED IN THE EEC AT A RATE OF SEVERAL TEN THOUSANDS OF TONS PER YEAR. THEY ARE PRODUCED BY THE DISSOLUTION OF METAL COPPER WHICH IS OFTEN VERY PURE.

IT APPEARS THAT IT IS BETTER TO AVOID THE METAL STATE STEP BY TRANSFORMING DIRECTLY MORE ORE LESS OXIDIZED RESIDUES INTO MARKETABLE SALTS.

THE RESEARCH PROGRAM WILL INCLUDE;

- AN INVENTORY OF RECOVERABLE CUPROUS MATERIALS

- LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS FOR :

. THE STUDY OF SULPHURIC LEACHING CONDITIONS (OPTIMIZATION OF OPERATING CONDITIONS)

. THE PURIFYING OF THE OBTAINED PRODUCT RO REACH A COMMERCIAL QUALITY

- A SUMMARY STUDY OF PRE-FEASIBILITY (TECHNICO-ECONOMIC STUDY OF THE PROCESS AND SALTS MARKET SURVEY).
