Objective TO DEVELOP EXPLORATION CRITERIA, BASED ON NEW METALLOGENIC MODELS, FOR MINERAL DEPOSITS BURIED BENEATH SEDIMENT COVER FOR USE IN AUTOMATED SCREENING OF COMPUTER-READABLE STRUCTURAL, REMOTELY SENSED, GEOCHEMICAL AND GOPHYSICAL DATA. CONSIDERABLE PROGESS HAS BEEN MADE IN UNDERSTANDING METALLOGENESIS IN PERMOTRIASSIC BASINS OVER HERCYNIAN BASEMENT. THIS RESEARCH PROJECT IS AIMED AT EXTENDING PREVIOUS WORK TO MINERALISATION IN SEDIMENTARY BASIN-BLOCK REGIMES, SUCH AS THOSE OF THE BRITISCH CARBONIFEROUS WHICH OVERLIES CALEDONIAN BASEMENT, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO DEVELOPING METHODS FOR DETECTING SUCH MINERALISATION BENEATH LATER SEDIMENTARY COVER. A FULLY INTEGRATED STUDY USING THE LATEST DEEP GEOLOGICAL, GEOPHYSICAL AND GEOCHEMICAL TECHNIQUES IS CARRIED OUT BASED ON THE EAST MIDLANDS REGION OF ENGLAND WHICH CONTAINS THE SOUTH PENNINE OREFIELD AND ITS PROBABLE EXTENSION BENEATH MESOZOIC COVER TO THE EAST. THE PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF LARGE QUANTITIES OF NEW GEOPHYSICAL (PARTICULARLY SEISMIC) AND GEOLOGICAL DATA TOGETHER WITH BOREHOLE SAMPLES WHICH ARE AVAILABLE TO THE INSTITUTE AS A RESULT OF INTENSIVE EXPLORATION ACTIVITY FOR HYDROCARBONS (COAL AND OIL) IN THE REGION IN RECENT YEARS. THESE WILL BE USED FOR DEEP GEOLOGICAL/GEOPHYSICAL INVESTIGATIONS AND SUPPLEMENTED BY NEW GEOCHEMICAL, MINERALOGICAL (INCLUDING FLUID INCLUSION STUDIES) AND ISOTOPIC INVESTIGATIONS OF MINERALOGICAL (INCLUDING FLUID INCLUSION STUDIES) AND ISOTOPIC INVESTIGATIONS OF MINERALISATION IN EXPOSED OREFIELDS AND BOREHOLE SAMPLES. PARTICULAR INTEREST WILL GIVEN TO QUANTITATIVE MODELS FOR CRUSTAL HYDROTHERMAL CONVECTION SYSTEMS LINKED TO ORE DEPOSITION AND THE DISTRIBUTION OF HEAT PRODUCTION. THREE MAIN TYPES OF MINERALISATION ARE OF PARTICULAR INTEREST: - PB-ZN-BA MINERALISATION ASSOCIATED WITH DINANTIAN REEFS; - EPIGENETIC MINERALISATION OF THE CARBONIFEROUS (PB-ZN-BA-F) AND PERMO-TRIAS (CU-V) SUITES ASSOCIATED WITH SEDIMENTARY BASIN MARGINS; - ROLL-FRONT (U-V-MO) STYLE MINERALISATION PRODUCED BY GROUND WATER MIGRATION IN SEDIMENTARY BASINS. THIS STUDY AND THE SYNSTHESIS OF RESULTS OBTAINED SO FA WILL BE PERFOMED IN CLOSE-CO-OPERATION WITH THE OPEN UNIVERSITY, MILTON KEYNES (G.C. BROWN).
