Objective
TO INVESTIGATE THE APPLICATION OF SURFACE PROPERTY BASED PROCESSES TO THE TREATMENT OF FINE MINERAL MIXTURES (SLIMES) AND TO COMPARE THE FE EFFICIENCIES OF THE DIFFERENT PROCESSES.
MINERAL SEPARATION PREOCESSES USING DIFFERENCES IN PHYSICAL PROPERTIES SUCH AS DENSITY, MAGNETIC SUSCEPTIBILITY ETS. FAIL TO PRERATE AT PARTICLE SIZES AROUND 10 M.
PROVROCESSES BASED ON SURFACE CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF MINERALS CAN BE BROADLY DIVIDED INTO THOSE INVOLVING MODIFICATION OF THE WETTING PROPERTIES OF MINERALS, E.G. FLOTATION, AND THOSE IN WHICH AGGREGATION OF THE MINERAL PARTICLES IS OBTAINED, E.G. FLOCCULATION AND COAGULATION. THE SURFACE CHEMICAL PROCESSES TO BE STUDIED IN THIS INVESTIGATION ARE :-
1. TWO-LIQUID FLOTATION : THIS PROCESS, WHICH INVOLVES THE COLLECTION OF HYDROPHOBIC PARTICLES WITH OIL DROPS, HAS BEEN APPLIED ON THE LABORATORY SCALE
2. SELECTIVE FLOCCULATION : IN THIS PROCESS MINERALS ARE SELECTIVELY AGGREGATED BY THE USE OF POLYELECTROLYTES OR OTHER REAGENTS.
3. OTHER POSSIBLE COMBINATIONS OF DISPERSION AND AGGREGATION.
4. SPHERRICAL AGGLOMERATION : THIS IS A SELECTIVE AGGLOMERATION PROCESS IN WHICH THE MINERALS ARE RENDERED HYDROPHOBIC, BY THE USE OF FLOTATION-TYPE REAGENTS, AND THEN AGGLOMERATED BY THE ADDITION OF SMALL AMOUNTS OF OIL.
5. CONVENTIONAL FLOTATION : THE FLOTATION OF THE SELECTED ORES WITH AVAILABLE LABORATORY EQUIPMENT WILL BE OPTIMISED AND THE RESULTS OBTAINED USED FOR COMPARATIVE PURPOSES. THE STUDIES WILL BE CONDUCTED INITIALLY ON ORES CONTAINING : CASSITERITE, PHOSPHATE/DOLOMITE/CALCITE, COMPLEX HEAVY METAL SULPHIDE, FLUORITE, BARITE AND CALCITE, WOLFRAMITE/SCHEELITE.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
