Objective
RECOGNITION OF CONCEALED GRANITOIDS BY LITHOGEOCHEMICAL STUDY OF THE ENVELOPE ROCKS. DISCRIMINATIOM BETWEEN METALLOGENICAL FERTILE OR STERILE GRANITES. RECOGNITION OF TUNGSTEN SPECIALISED GRANITES.
A FINAL OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT IS TO EXAMINE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THIS LITHOGEOCHEMISTRY AND THE GEOCHEMISTRY OF THE OVERLYING SOILS.
MAIN AMIS:
RECOGNITION OF CONCEALED GRANITOIDS BY LITHOGEOCHEMICAL STUDY OF THE ENVELOPE ROCKS. DISCRIMINATION BETWEEN METALLOGENICAL FERTILE OR STERILE GRANITES. RECOGNITION OF TUNGSTEN SPECIALISED GRANITES.
A SINGLE AND COMPREHENSIVE SET OF SAMPLES, ANALYSED FOR A WIDE RANGE OF MAJOR, MINOR AND TRACE ELEMENTS, SHOULD GENERATE APPRIPRIATE DATA WITH WHICH TO ATTACK THE 3 OBJECTIVES LISTED ABOVE.
MATERIAL FOR ANALYSIS WILL BE DERIVED FROM: I.G.S. COLLECTIONS, ADDITIONAL ON-SITE SAMPLING AND SAMPLES FROM COMMERCIAL BOREHOLES. LITHOGEOCHEMICAL SAMPLES WILL BE SOUGHT FROM THE GRANITE ITSELF AND WITHIN THE THERMAL AUREOLE.
SINCE THE GRANITE BODIES TO BE SAMPLED SHOULD REPRESENT AS VARIED A SELECTION AS IS POSSIBLE, IT IS INTENTED TO EXAMINE INTRUSIONS IN S.W. ENGLAND, N. WALES AND N.E. SCOTLAND. THIS PROVIDES A RANGE OF HERCYNIAN AND CALEDONIAN GRANITES OF DIFFERING METALLIC ASSOCIATIONS WITH DIFFERENT ORIGINAL COMPOSITIONS AND FRACTIONATION HISTORIES INTRUDED INTO DIFFERING TECTONIC REGIMES AT DIFFERENT STRUCTURAL LEVELS.
MAJOR AND TRACE ELEMENTS WILL BE ANALYSED BY XRF TECHNIQUES AND RARE EARTH ELEMENTS BY NEUTRON ACTIVATION. IN ALL TOTAL OF FORTY-FOUR ELEMENTS SHOULD BE AVAILABLE FOR COMPUTER DATA PROCESSING.
MODELS FOR RECOGNITION OF FERTILITY AND SPECIALISATION WILL BE TESTED ALL ALONG AND ARE EXPECTED TO INCUR CONTINUOUS REVISION. LIAISON WITH PARALLEL PROJECTS IN FRANCE AND HOLLAND MAY SIGNIFICANTLY ASSIST IN THIS PHASE OF THE PROJECT AND, FURTHERMORE, SHOULD PROVIDE FURTHER DATA FOR THE TESTING OF THE EVOLVING GEOCHEMICAL MODELS.
A FINAL OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT IS TO EXAMINE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THIS LITHOGEOCHEMISTRY AND THE GEOCHEMISTRY OF THE OVERLYING SOILS.
