Objective
TO PRODUCE AN ENGINEERING DESIGN SPECIFICATION FOR EQUIPMENT SUITABLE FOR CHLORIDE ROASTING SYSTEMS FOR TIN RECOVERY FROM COMPLEX STANNIFEROUS MATERIALS.
THE PROPOSED PROGRAMME WILL BE CARRIED OUT ON COMPLEX TIN-BEARING ORES OF UK ORIGIN, INCLUDING COMPLEX STANNIFEROUS HAEMATITES WHICH ARE KNOWN TO EXIST WORLWIDE. THE PROGRAMME COMPRISES THREE PARTS :
A) LABORATORY SCALE KINETIC STUDIES
THE BASIS OF THE TESTWORK WILL BE TO DETERMINE THE THERMOCHEMICAL CONDITIONS FOR OPTIMUM TIN YIELD. THIS WILL INCLUDE A STUDY OF ;:
1) FEED PREPARATION; METHODS OF ADDING THE CHLORIDE SALT AND REDUCTANT.
2) REAGENT REQUIREMENTS; THE EFFECT OF TYPE OF SALT AND REDUCTANT, AND AMOUNT OF SALT AND REDUCTANT.
3) KINETIC FACTORS, THE EFFECT OF TIME AND TEMPERATURE AND DETERMINATION OF RATE CONTROLLING FACTORS.
4.MATERIALS BALANCES; DEPORTMENT OF TIN, SALT AND OTHER NON-FERROUS ELEMENTS WHERE NECESSARY.
B) LARGER SCALE STUDIES
THE EMPHASIS AT THE LARGER SCALE WILL BE TO CARRY OUT A LIMITED NUMBER OF PILOT-SCALE CAMPAIGNS TO STUDY THE VOLATILIZATION AND COLLECTION OF THE TIN CHLORIDE PRODUCT ON A CONTINUOUS BASIS. HEAT AND MASS BALANCES FOR THE OVERALL REACTION SEQUENCES WILL BE OBTAINED TOGETHER WITH MORE DETAIL ON THE VOLATILIZATION STEP AND THE PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH COLLECTION AND CORROSION.
TWO APPROACHES WILL BE INVESTIGATED, VIZ,
1) DIRECT FIRING; EITHER A ROTARY KILN OR A HEARTH ROASTER WILL BE USED WITH COLLECTION OF THE VOLATILE PRODUCTS BY WET SCRUBBING.
2) INDIRECT FIRING; EITHER A ROTARY KILN OR A SHAFT RETOR WILL BE USED WITH COLLECTION OF THE VOLATILE PRODUCT BY WET SCRUBBING. CONDENSATION OF A SOLID CHLORIDE PHASE.
THE PROBLEM OF TIN RECOVERY FROM THE TIN PRODUCTS COLLECTED WILL BE EXAMINED, INVOLVING SMELTING, HYDROMETALLURGICAL UPGRADING, AND/OR ELECTROLYSIS TO PRODUCE METALLIC TIN.
C) ECONOMIC APPRAISAL
ON COMPLETION OF THE EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAMME, THE POTENTIAL OF THE PROPOSED PROCESSING ROUTE WILL BE EVALUATED. THE SCALE FACTORS AND PROCESS ECONOMICS WILL BE ASSESSED IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE SENSITIVITY OF OPERATING COSTS TO HEAD GRADE OF ORE AND SIZE OF OPERATION. THE PROGRAMME WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE WARREN SPRING LABORATORY AT STEVENAGE.
