RECOVERY OF NICKEL AND COBALT FROM LATERITES BY SULPHURIC ACID LEACHING AT ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE

Objective

TO DEVELOP A SIMPLE AND ECONOMICALLY VIABLE HYDROMETALLURGICAL METHOD FOR THE RECOVERY OF NICKEL AND COBALT FROM LATERITES.

THE RESEARCH WORK COVERS THE FOLLOWING AREAS:

1. DETAILED MINERALOGICAL CHATACTERIZATION OF THE LATERITES BY X-RAY DIFFRACTION, OPTICAL AND SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY, ELECTRON-PROBE MICROANALYSIS, AND DIFFERENTIAL THERMAL ANALYSIS-THERMOGRAVIMETRY.

2. STUDY OF YTHE MINERALOGICAL CHANGES AND OF THE POSSIBLE SOLID-STATE REACTION THAT OCCUR DURING THE HEATING OF LATERITES TO TEMPERATURES RANGING BETWEEN 300-700C IN INERT, OXIDIZING AND REDUCTING ATMOSPHERES. THE SAMETECHNIQUES AS IN (1) WILL BE APPLIED.

3. STUDY OF THE EFFECT OF HEATING ON THE LEACHING OF LATERITES WITH SULPHURIC ACID. VARIOUS PARAMETERS WILL BE STUDIED, INCLUDING :

- THE EFFECT OF THE PREHEATING TIME AND TEMPERATURE ON THE LEACHING CHARACTERISTICS.

- THE EFFECT OF ACID CONCENTRATION, PARTICLE SIZE, SLURRY DENSITY, RATE OF AGITATION, TIME AND TEMPERATURE, ADDITION OF OXIDIZING AGENTS, ETC. ON THE LEACHING CHARACTERISTICS. WITH CAREFULLY PLANNED KINETIC EXPERIMENTS A REACTION MODEL WILL BE DEVELOPED AND THE RATE-DETERMINING STEP WILL BE REVEALED. THE BASIS PARAMETERS TO BE FOLLOWED DURING THE EXECUTION OF THIS SET OF EXPERIMENTS WILL BE THE NI AND CO RECOVERY, THE NI:FE RATIO IN THE RESULTING LEACH SOLUTIONS, THE DISSOLUTION OF OTHER ELEMENTS PRESENT IN THE LATERITES (I.E. MG, CA, ETC), AND THE ACID CONSUMPTION.

4. DEVELOPMENT OF A METHOD FOR THE REMOVAL OF IRON FROM THE LEACH SOLUTION, AND FOR THE RECOVERY OF NICKEL AND COBALT. THE MAIN INVESTIGATION CONCERNS :

- PRECIPITATION OF IRON IN A READILY FILTERABLE FORM, I.E. AS GEOTHITE, JAROSITE OR HEMATITE.

- SELECTIVE PRECIPITATION OF NI BY H2S. THE PROCESS PARAMETERS WILL BE EVALUATED.

- INVESTIGATION OF THE POSSIBILITY OF LIQUID-LIQUID EXTRACTION OF NICKEL FROM THE LEACH SOLUTION.

5. CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS, MATHEMATICAL MODELLING OF THE VARIOUS OPERATIONS, SYNSTHESIS OF THE OPTIMUN FLOW-SHEET.

6. PRELIMINARY PROCESS CALCULATIONS, DESIGN OF THE REACTORS AND OTHER EQUIPMENT, CRITICAL ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF THE PROPOSED PROCESS.
