Objective
DEVELOPMENT OF TECHNIQUES ALLOWING CONTINUOUS MONITORING OF BATH CONSTITUENTS IN ORDER TO IMPROVE THE RECYCLING YIELD, THE ENERGY ACCOUNT AND THE PRODUCT QUALITY DURING ELECTROREFINING FROM COMPOSITE NON-FERROUS SLUDGES.
DUE TO THE COMPLEX COMPOSITION OF THE ELECTROLYTES OBTAINED FROM COMPOSITE NON-FERROUS SCRAP, THE TIME-DEPENDENT VARIATIONS OF THE BULK COMPOSITION AND CHANGING PROCESS CONDITIONS (TEMPERATURE, CURRENT DENSITY, CATHODE SURFACE PROPERTIES,...) THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW MEASUREMENT AND CONTROL TECHNIQUES IS IMPERATIVE. ACTUAL AVAILABLE INSTRUMENTATION GIVES UNRELIABLE DATA.
THE PURPOSE OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP NEW ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES BASED ON THE USE OF ROTATING ELECTRODES COMBINED WITH ELECTROCHEMICAL AND HYDRODYNAMIC TRANSIENT TECHNIQUES.
USING THIS COMBINATION WILL BE POSSIBLE TO INTERACT WITH :
1) THE HYDRODYNAMIC DOUBLE LAYERS
- WITH ROTATING DISC AND CYLINDER ELECTRODES
- THE SHAPE OF THE ELECTRODE AND ITS ROTATION SPEED DETERMINE THE MASS TRANSPORT
- RELATED TO THE PUMPING ACTION OF SUCH ELECTRODES THE TRANSPORT OF SUSPENDED BATH IMPURITIES TO THE WORKING ELECTRODE IS ALSO UNDER CONTROL
- THE EFFECT OF PERIODIC OSCILLATING ROTATION SPEEDS ON THE LOWER DETECTION LIMITS WILL BE DEEPLY ANALYZED.
2) THE ELECTROCHEMICAL DOUBLE LAYERS
ON POLARISATION OF THE ROTATING WORKING ELECTRODES BESIDES HYDRODYNAMIC DOUBLE LAYERS, ELECTROCHEMICAL DOUBLE LAYERS ARE BUIT UP.
IN THESE ELECTROCHEMICAL DOUBLE LAYERS ABSORPTION PHENOMENA AND REDUCTION PROCESS OF IONIC AND COMPLEX SPECIES WILL OCCUR.
THE USE OF SHORT PULSING VARIATIONS OF THE ELECTRODE POTENTIAL MAKES MEASUREMENTS UNDER CONSTANT WORKING CONDITIONS OF THE ELECTRODE POSSIBLE. THE UNRAVELLING OF VARIATIONS IN POTENTIAL AND RELATED CURRENT VARIATIONS OBTAINED IN THIS WAY WILL ALLOW A SENSITIVE DETECTION OF ALL BATH CONSTITUENTS EITHER IN A QUALITATIVE OR A QUANTIVE WAY. THE USE OF HIGH PRECISION MEASUREMENT APPARATUS FOR RAPID DATA ACQUISITION AND AUTOMATIC DATA PROCESSING IS A NECESSITY.
