DEVELOPMENT AND PRODUCTION OF A NEW CLASS OF NICKEL-HARD-ALLOYS FOR SUBSTITUTION OF COBALT-HARD-ALLOYS.

Objective

DEVELOPMENT OF TERNARY AND QUATERNARY HARD ALLOYS BASED ON NICKEL, FOR USE AS WEAR COMPONENTS, TO REPLACE THE RECENTLY-USED HARD ALLOYS BASED ON COBALT.

HARD ALLOYS FOR USE AS WEAR COMPONENTS BASED ON NICKEL, WILL BE DEVELOPED WHICH MOSTLY CONTAIN COMPLEX BORIDES OF THE -TYPE. OF SPECIAL INTEREST ARE THE SPECIAL METALS (M) OF THE IVA- AND VA- GROUPS OF THE PERIODIC TABLE WHICH TRANSFORM INTO COMPLEX -BORIDE PHASES OF THE TYPE NI21M2B6.

THE PROPOSED RESEARCH WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN TWO PHASES, DEPENDING ON CONSTITUTION AND MELTING BEHAVIOUR. THE FIRST PART WILL BEGIN WITH:
- BASIC RESEARCH ON TERNARY SYSTEMS OF NICKEL-BORON-SPECIAL METAL, AND
- CONTINUE WITH QUATERNARY SYSTEMS OF NICKEL-CHROMIUM-BORON-SPECIAL METAL.

DURING THIS PHASE, MELTS OF THE ALLOYS WILL BE MADE AT CONCENTRATION CLOSE TO THOSE PERTAINING TO PRACTICAL APPLICATION, AND THE MELTING CHARACTERISTICS, COMPOSITION AND CONSTITUTION OF PHASE AND HARDNESS WILL BE DETERMINED.

DURING THE SECOND PART OF THE PROGRAMME, FURTHER OPTIMIZATION OF THE DEVELOPED HARD ALLOYS WILL TAKE PLACE BY THE ADDITION OF SMALL QUATITIES OF OTHER ALLOYING ELEMENTS SUCH AS CARBON, SILICON AND IRON. BASED ON THESE RESULTS, TEST COATINGS OF THE SELECTED QUATERNARY ALLOYS WILL BE PREPARED, AFTER VACUUM MELTING AND AOTMIZING IN A PROTECTIVE GAS, BY THERMAL SPRAYING.
THESE COATINGS WILL BE SUBJECTED TO PRACTICAL AND LABORATORY TESTING.

THE COMPANY OF HERMANN C. STARCK, FRG, (SUM-O04-D), WILL BE FULLY INVOLVED IN THIS PROJECT.
