Objective
SUBSTITUTION OF COPPER FIELD COILS IN ELECTRIC MOTORS BY FERRITE PERMANENT MAGNETS WITH IMPPROVED MAGNETIC PROPERTIES. THE DEVELOPMENT OF FINE GRAINED HARD MONOCRYSTALLINE FERRITE POWDER FOR THESE MAGNETS.
UP TO THE PRESENT TIME, ALL ELECTRIC MOTORS WITH POWER DENSITIES ARE DESIGNED WITH COPPER FIELD-COILS, FOR GENERATING THE STATIC MAGNETIC FIELD. IN MOST OF THESE APPLICATIONS, THE FIELD-COILS COULD BE REPLACED BY FERRITE PERMANENT MAGNETS WITH A COERCIVE FORCE OF ABOUT 5 KOE AND A REMANENCE NOT LESS THAN 400 MT, TOGETHER WITH ELECTRONIC POWER CONTROL. FOR THE PRODUCTION OF SUCH HIGH-COERCIVE FERRITE MAGNETS, FINE GRAINED (O.3 TO O.8 UM), MONOCRYSTALLINE HARD FERRITE POWDERS HAVE TO BE USED. THE PREPARATION OF SUCH POWDERS IS NOT YET WELL DEVELOPED. DORNIER HAS DEVELOPED A MODIFIED SPRAY-ROASTING PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF HARD FERRITE POWDER, UTILIZING A FERROUS CHLORIDE SOLUTION. HARD FERRITE POWDERS PRODUCED BY THE DORNIER PROCESS SHOW A COERCIVE FORCE UP TO 6.4 KOE, WHICH IS IN THE ORDER OF THE THEORETICAL MAXIMUM AND IS MUCH HIGHER THAN THE PRESENTLY REALIZED COERCIVE FORCES IN COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE FERRITE MAGNETS.
IN THE FIRST PHASE OF THE PRESENT PROJECT, THIS PROCESS WILL BE FURTHER DEVELOPED. FROM THE RESULTS OBTAINED IN PHASE 1, PHASE 2 WILL SCALE THE EXISTING LABORATORY PROCESS FROM A SINGLE-STEP PRODUCTION OF READY-TO-PRESS SPRAY-ROASTED CALCINED HARD FERRITE POWDERS UP TO THE PILOT PLANT SCALE. IN ADDITION, THIS STAGE OF THE PROJECT WILL INCLUDE THE FITTING OF THE POWDER PROPERTIES TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF INDIVIDUAL PROCESSING PARAMETERS DURING MAGNET-MAKING AS WELL AS THE DEVELOPMENT OF PROCEDURES FOR SUBSEQUENT POWDER TREATMENT AND COMPACTING. FURTHERMORE, AN EXTENDED SERIES OF TESTS WILL HELP TO FIT THE PROPERTIES OF COMPACTED MAGNETS TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF INDUSTRIAL USERS. AT THE SAME TIME, A PILOT PLANT FOR THE SPRAY-ROASTING OF PICKLE LIQUOR WILL BE MODIFIED TO FIT THE DEMANDS OF THE DORNIER PROCESS.
IN PHASE 3, THE MODIFIED PILOT PLANT WILL BE RUW WITH PRACTICAL CHARGES OF ABOUT 200 KG OF POWDER. IN THIS PHASE, PROBLEMS WILL BE MET WHICH ARE TYPICAL FOR THE UPSCALING OF PROCESS-PARAMETERS. IT WILL GIVE USEFUL INFORMATION ABOUT THE CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH FULL-SCALE POWDER PRODUCTION IS POSSIBLE AND WILL OPEN UP THE POSSIBILITY OF PRODUCING IMPROVED HARD FERRITE MAGNETS ON THE COMMERCIAL SCALE.
PHASES 2 AND 3 WILL BE CARRIED OUT AS TRANSNATIONAL CO-OPERATION BETWEEN DORNIER AND FERRITE-PRODUCING COMPANIES FROM FRANCE, THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY, GREAT BRITAIN AND ITALY.
