Objective
SUBSTITUTION OF THE RESISTANCE SEAM WELDING PROCESS FOR TIN-PLATED STEEL CANS BY THE DEVELOPMENT OF LASER WELDING FOR ORGANIC-COATED STEEL CANS.
ONE OF THE AIMS IN THE CANNING INDUSTRY IS THE SUBSTITUTION OF TIN-PLATED STEELS BY ORGANIC COATINGS. HOWEVER, THE JOINING TECHNIQUE IS A PROBLEM. FOR TIN-PLATED STEEL SHEET SEVERAL WELDING TECHNIQUES, SUCH AS RESISTANCE WELDING, ARE AVAILABLE, WHICH ARE ECONOMICALLY APPLIED AT PRODUCTION SPEEDS OF MORE THAN 50M/MIN. THIS IS NOT SO FOR ORGANIC AND OTHER COATINGS SINCE THE QUALITY OF THE WELDS CANNOT BE ASSURED. NEVERTHELESS, EXPERIMENTS WITH LASER BEAMS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT, AND HAVE LED TO PRODUCTION SPEEDS OF 20 TO 30 M/MIN. WITH GOOD QUALITY OF THE JOINT. IN THE FIRST PHASE OF THIS WORK, HIGHER (UP TO 100M/MIN.) AND THEREFORE MORE ECONOMIC WELDING SPEEDS WILL TRY TO BE ACHIEVED WHILST MAINTAINING THE INTEGRITY OF THE WELDS. SUCH A SPEED HAS NOT YET BEEN ATTAINED USING A 6KW LASER SYSTEM DUE TO HIGH RREFLECTION LOSSES AND INSUFFICIENT STABILITY OF THE LASER AND THE QUALITY OF THE WELD. DEVELOPMENT WILL BE CARRIED OUT TO FIND A METHOD TO DECREASE THE REFLECTION LOSSES BY BETTER FOCALIZATION OF THE LASER BEAM AND TO IMPROVE THE BEAM POWER AND DENSITY. THESE PARAMETERS WILL BE CORRELATED WITH THE WELDING RESULTS. A SPECIAL ON-LINE MEASURING DEVICE WILL BE USED TO CORRELATE THE SHORT AND LONG-TERM INSTABILITIES IN THE LASER BEAM WITH THE INTEGRITY OF THE WELDS. HAVING OPTIMIZED THE HIGH POWER LASER WELDING PROCESS, THE SECOND PHASE WILL BEGIN. THIS WELDING PROCESS ON AN INDUSTRIAL SCALE.
THE INVESTIGATIONS WILL BE CARRIED OUT AT BIAS IN CO-OPERATION WITH THE KRUPP CO. AT ESSEN. ADDITIONAL CO-OPERATION IS FORESEEN WITH FIAT OF ITALY FOR RUNNING ADDITIONAL TESTS WITH A 15 KW LASER.
