NEW CONTACT MATERIALS WITH REDUCED SILVER CONTENT FOR LOW VOLTAGE SWITCHGEAR.

Objective

TO REDUCE THE SILVER CONTENT USED IN LOW VOLTAGE SWITCHGEAR CONTACTS BY 10-15 WT.% BY THE SUBSTITUTION OF METALS SUCH AS COPPER AND NICKEL.

COMPOSITE MATERIALS WILL BE DEVELOPED IN WICH FROM 10 TO 10 WT.% OF THE SILVER CONTENT WILL BE REPLACED BY LESS EXPENSIVE METALS SUCH AS NICKEL OR COPPER, RESULTING IN COMPOSITES SUCH AS AG-NI-MEO OR AG-CU-MEO; WHERE ME IS CADMIUM OR TIN.

POWDER METALLURGY IS THE PREFERRED PREPARATION TECHNIQUE FOR SUCH MATERIALS DUE TO THE INSOLUBILITY OF NI IN AG, THE MINIMAL SOLUBILITY OF CU IN AG-CD, AND TO PREVENT THE OXIDATION OF THE CU.

IN THE FIRST PHASE SELECTION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF METAL SUCH AS CU, NI, CDO, SNO2 AND AG WILL TAKE PLACE, FOLLOWED BY OPTIMIZATION OF THE MIXING, COMPRESSION AND SINTERING CONDITIONS. THIS PHASE WILL BE CONCLUDED BY TESTING THE ELECTRICAL CONTACT PERFORMANCE USING ARC EROSION UNDER ACCELERATED PERFORMANCE CONDITIONS, ON A SERIES OF PROTOTYPES.

IN THE SECOND PHASE, THE BEST MATERIALS SELECTED IN THE FIRTS STEP WILL BE SUBMITTED TO A MORE ACCURATE TEST, IN ORDER TO OBTAIN COMPLETE RESULTS AS TO THE ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE, CONTACT HEATING, AND RESISTANCE TO ARCING THAT WILL LEAD TO OPTIMAL DESING FOR SWITCHGEAR INTENDED FOR LOW VOLTAGE OPERATION.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
